Amalfi day trip - private car or ferries?

I'm planning on a day visit of the Amalfi coast around October 4th. I'm starting the day in Capri and ending at Rome, so I have flexibility about where I actually start/end.

Is a 8 hour car hire more effecient, or would it actually be better to hop ferries (Capri to Positano to Amalfi to Salerno, then train out)? I'm worried a car hire would spend most the time in traffic. Ferries could be more fun but I'd be worried about time schedules the whole time. The car hire I'm looking at can pick up and drop off at multiple locations so they have flexibility too.

How bad is traffic in early October?

The earliest ferry departs Capri at 11:15 arriving in Positano at 11:45. It doesn’t take long to explore Positano so you can jump on the ferry departing Positano at 13:30 arriving in Amalfi at 13:55. The next ferry departing Amalfi for Salerno is at 18:25 arriving in Salerno at 18:45. You can then take a direct train from Salerno departing at 19:37 arriving at the Roma Termini station at 22:34.

MaryPat, that's more or less my ferry plan - I'm curious if a private driver for 8 hours is more efficient use of time, especially with traffic.

I will not have luggage, only a small backpack.

Why would you want to take the ferry Capri-Sorrento 20 min then get a driver for 8 hours when it’s 40 minutes from Capri-Positano.
Here is the other ferry company for the Amalfi coast.

It will drop you off about 2 blocks from the Salerno rail station.

We’ve been there in early September and October and the coast road can be wall to wall traffic. From Sorrento to Positano by car or bus can be 1 1/2 hours long.

It takes 45m to drive from Positano to Amalfi and 1h 30m from Amalfi to Salerno. The Amalfi Coast Road is a two-lane hilly winding road where traffic comes to a halt to let buses through on the curviest sections. Whether you’re taking a ferry or a car both modes of transportation offer different scenery. I feel the Amalfi Coast Road needs two nights so you can take a bus or car from west to east and a ferry from east to west; this way you'll see the entire Amalfi Coast from both land and water.

We used an 8 hour car and driver in the last week of May, which worked out fine for us. 1 1/2 hours free time each in Positano and in Ravello, less in Amalfi (which I found a little underwhelming anyway), and touchdowns for views in two other towns. We should have declined the suggested Green Grotto, but we knew enough to say, "Does the pottery store have bathrooms?" when offered that; We used the multiple rest rooms and moved on. Good value if expensive. We had normal, i.e. annoying but not stationary, traffic. I suspect October is better than the last week of May. (No personal experience in Oct.)

Our car service came from out (Ambasciatori, big) hotel's land services partner, charged to our hotel bill.

There's nothing wrong with ferries, but make sure you have the timetable for the date you are traveling; remember that ferry company #1 will not tell you that you could leave an hour sooner on Ferry Company #2. Also note that places like Positano cannot take as large a ferryboat as, say Sorrento. That means less capacity and more wave action.

You should note that the Capri and Rome travel is not negligible. This is a very busy day. And the boat ride to Positano is longer than to Sorrento. Many Capri hotels are some distance/time from the ferry docks. Make sure you learn where along the 1/4 mile of docks your actual boat is leaving from. Your daylight time (check astronomical info) on the AC will be limited. You may wish to prioritize, fewer. destinations. Note that a discounted Frecciarossa train ticket cannot be used on the next train if you miss your departure. You have to buy a new one at the walkup price.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it, only to keep your eyes open to your plans. I'm sure Positano is lovely from the water. But I was satisfied with the views from the beach and from adjacent highway viewpoints.
