We're taking our 18-year-old daughter to the Amalfi Coast this summer. We chose Sorrento as a base for easy transport to/from Pompeii, Capri, etc. She is most looking forward to visiting Pompeii, the chairlift up to Monte Solaro, and a hike along the Path of the Gods in Amalfi. It's the first leg of our trip to Italy, so she's also looking forward to simply strolling around and taking in the scenery.

Thanks for the Path of the Gods idea...hadn't heard about that. We are looking into a day trip to the hotsprings on Ischia Isl. I think Sorrento is a good outpost as well!

Kathy The Amalfi Coast is pure romance but if your teens enjoy one breathtaking view after another then a base in Sorrento or Positano and its neighbors such as Praino, Amalfi and Ravello will not disappoint. The restaurants are superb and seeing lemons the size of grapefruits is wonderful. If the kids like enjoy serious music then Ravello has a famous classical music schedule in the Spring/Summer from a magnificent venue overlooking the cliffs. Then you could go to Pompei or Capri from any of the towns if you talk to your hotel.
I took my kids when they were teens and the experience was magical. As you can tell my family is hooked.

Sounds like you had a very magical experience. Hope we are as fortunate!

We've taken our teens/young adults daughters twice. I would stay in Sorrento where there is more shopping and action but in a safe way. We have stayed at Hotel Minerva and Settimo Cielo which both have pools. Settimo is less expensive with more balconies but not as special of a pool or breakfasts. Although the pools are not amazing on their own they have beautiful views of the sea and are very refreshing with the summer heat and humidity. We've also stayed in Capri and when we went to the port a Caprese man offered us a private boat tour. It was out of our price range until we negiotated to go on a small boat with his 17 year old nephew driving us around the island for three hours. We'd jumped in the water to swim and went into small grottos. A huge favorite of us all. We did go to the smaller beach in Positano but my husband got a horrible bite from some sort of huge jelly fish. We rented chairs the next day on the main beach but the water had some sort of fuel floating on it. Great lemon granita there, follow the local children. Pompeii for sure. Depending on their ages and interest the Museum in Naples with its naughty art provides quite some conversations. We took the hydrofoil over and it was fun.

Kathy Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei ) is one of a number of hikes along the Amalfi Coast. If you decide to add a hike to your itinerary, visit this site for maps and wealth of information:
http://www.giovis.com/Egiovis.htm Also consider purchasing the book "Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri car tours and walks" from Sunflower books. I purchased my copy from this site and had it within 10 days: http://www.sunflowerbooks.co.uk/index2.htm. It's a great guide ... very easy to understand with detailed descriptions of over 50 hikes, excursions, and car tours in the Amalfi region.

Kathy, if you can daytrip or overnight as far south as Paestum, it has a good beach, ancient Greek ruins, and mozzarella farms, all of which might interest teens.
