Amalfi Coast with kids in August

We are planning to spend 9-12 days in naples/Amalfi coast area (early July or end of August). We have 2 active boys (8 and 11).
I am looking for recommendation regarding planning this trip.
We are looking to fly in and out of Naples.
I have looked a a couple of itineraries (Naples 2nt, Amalfi 2nt, sorrento 3nt, capri 2nt).
The transfer options are private transfers or rental car.
Is it easy to navigate these towns with public transportation? do i have to make advance reservations, is it expensive?
How about the ferry from Sorrento to capri and back from Capri to Naples? do i have to make advance reservations, are they expensive?
Any help in planning will be appreciated.

I think any Ferry ride would be wonderful. There are several places to see. You could go to the local library and check out a copy of Rick Steves Italy book for some very detailed info.

Public transport - either by SITA bus (along the Amalfi coastline), Circumvesiviana local train (between Naples and Sorrento), or ferry (Naples to Capri) - is inexpensive. No advanced reservations needed - you show up and buy a ticket. I navigated everything by public transport and it was straightforward. At the time you're going, the heat and crowds will be quite unpleasant (no surprise there, I hope).

Public transportation in the area is very good and inexpensive. I would suggest adding a day or two to Naples and Sorrento. From Naples it’s easy to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius. I would not overnight on the Amalfi Coast but stay in Sorrento and take an all day tour to see the coast. As much as I like to rent cars in Italy, I travel off season when it’s less crowded. You don’t want a car in this area and you won’t need one when you’ll be visiting. But if you do rent a car, don’t drive the road to Amalfi. At the height of the season, it is crowded, slow and dangerous. Rick Steves has a discount deal with Mondo Tours in the Naples-Sorrento-Amalfi area and they’ve received favorable reviews on this site.
