Amalfi Coast with a 6 year old

As part of our vacation we plan to stay 4-5 days in the Amalfi coast. We plan to arrive there around the 1st week of June. Since we will be sightseeing in Paris and Rome prior I want this piece of the vacation to be just enjoying the views etc.. not necessarily sightseeing. As a result we have ruled out Pompeii. From reading on this website: My thought was to stay in Positano -- then visit via hydrofoil (if that is possible) Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi/Ravello. Any suggestion on a nice hotel in Positano? Would like a hotel with a pool (not sure if that is possible) and close to ocean. How close via hydrofoil will the trips be to Amalfi, Sorento and Capri? Opinions on the above itinerary? Thank you in advance for your help,
Jennifer

Positano is cute but climbs a steep hill. We went to two beaches there one with an oil like slick on the sea and the other where my husband got a severe bite from a huge jelly fish. Sorrento is much better located to day trip from or split your stay in both cities. That way you get to experience both after the day trippers leave and in the evening when Italian towns often turn magical. The ferry ride between them is so nice looking up at the towns clinging to the cliffs and down into the wonderful blue sea. In Sorrento Hotel Minerva has a wonderful pool with amazing views and is so refreshing on a hot day. Also across the street the more affordable Settimo Cielo with lots of balconies but a smaller pool. Nice to eat on the balconies and there is a great little market to buy snacks at the base of the hill. Don't miss the lemon granita.

As Karen said, Positano is on a steep hill. About the only flat area is the beach. With a child that young you may want to consider staying in Sorrento which is relativly flat ( at least compared to Positano).
