I will be traveling to the Amalfi coast in early July and am completely overwhelmed as to where to stay. I will be traveling with my husband and 18 yr old daughter using public transportation. Looking for recommendation on the best town to base ourselves in that has easy access to other towns and is also more low key (not Positano or Salerno). Ideally I would love to stay at an agroturismo. Many thanks in advance!
Possibly La Divina, in Praiano. Never actually been there, but it's the one I would try on my 1st trip to the Amalfi Coast, which will be soon, hopefully🙏🏻
Salerno would be more low key than Sorrento
If you are relying on public transportation those are your best choices
Not sure you’ll find agriturismos in the area and even if, you’d likely need a car
We've reserved an Airbnb in Atrani. Lots of steps but it looks low-key and has a view. There's access to livelier Amalfi, buses and the ferry as we plan to do mostly public transportation. However, I have reserved a car to pick us up on our last day. They will take us to Pompeii, wait while we tour and then deliver us to the train station. A driver seemed to be the least stressful way to pull all these things together. It's our biggest splurge of the trip but one we agreed will make our lives easier.
Anywhere on the ferry line: https://www.travelmar.it/en/index
Also consider Atrani, which is a short walk from Amalfi.
I stayed in Amalfi town and really liked it. But we walked through Atrani from Ravello on our way back to Amafi town.
It is quieter than Amalfi but you basically walk through a tunnel and you are in Amalfi which is the transportation hub and why we stayed there.
So seems to me the best of all worlds.
When I was there, I stayed in Sorrento that was a great jumping off point to visit Positano, Amalfi, Pompeii, Naples and Capri. However, I didn’t care for the town Sorrento. I suggest staying in Amalfi that a lot of people like.
I've stayed in Sorrento and Salerno. I used Sorrento as a base to visit around the Bay of Naples using the Circumvesuviana train and it was very convenient, lots of restaurant choices and quite pleasant town but nothing special. I stayed in Salerno to explore the Amalfi Coast towns, enjoy the scenic beauty and day trip to Paestum as well. Both my trips were during off-season. I liked Salerno a lot more - it has a well-preserved historic center, lots of restaurants, a large sandy beach and a lovely seaside promenade. Both lodging and food were cheaper than in Sorrento which was cheaper than the AC villages.
Thank you everyone for the great suggestions. I think we will do 3 days in Sorrento and 3 days in Praiano or Amalfi. I really want to stay in Praiano but am concerned about transportation. Thoughts?
