Amalfi Coast...Where to begin(and stay)

My wife and I are going to be on the Amalfi Coast the first week of August...actually only 3+ days. We are still pondering where to make our home base. Our initial plan was Positano. We are still leaning this way because everything we have read and the photos we have seen look spectacular. We are just looking to eat great food, relax, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the coast. However, we are a little concerned about the crowds. We wouldn't really mind them, but just hope they are not overwhelming. We have found a couple of really nice looking hotels in Vico Enquense, just northeast of Sorrento. Although the hotels themselves look great, I get the impression that the cliffs along the ocean are not quite as dramatic as they are further along the coast (Positano & Amalfi). Although we want to relax, we also want to have plenty of local options to eat at, not just hotel restaurants. The view of the ocean looks nice, but i wonder if we are better served staying in a different city if they do indeed have more dramatic ocean/cliff views. Also wondering on any local sand beach in Vico. I am wondering if anyone would have any recommendations on which area to stay in? Any help would be much appreciated!! I leaned on this helpline for my Tuscany questions and the responses were great. hoping for more of the same. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Google the Hotel Pupetto in Positano. It's off by itself on its own beach about a five minute walk from the heart of Positano. It has its own great restaurant but there are many other choices in Positano and the neighboring towns (including in the hills above town)

I think you pretty well have a good handle on the area. Positano might be the best choice for you. The scenery is great, it is a decent size and you do have the ferry to Capri right there. It is going to be crowded so you better make your reservations ASAP. Positano is also located where it is fairly easy to get to other towns.

Jay Stayed in Sorrento for 3 days and Positano for 3 days. If you want beautiful scenery and relax I'd say Positano. Google Residence la Tavolozza. It is a family run hotel in the heart of the town with the most spectacular view. If you decide on this hotel make sure you ask for the balcony room with bath. Of the 3 rooms with balconies 2 have baths across the hall.
This place has no restaurant at all, but tabac shop with cappucino etc. just down or up the road. Just up the street is a resaurant that has tables on the side walk at night overlooking the bay - spectacular again. We ask the matriarch of the family for a different place to eat besides the beach and she phoned toa place high up in the hills - they came and picked us up and needless to say was a great experience. They also drove us home. You can also take the ferry from there to the town of Amalfi - great view of the coastline -explore there- also on the main dock area are buses for 1E or maybe now a bit more that take up up into the hills to a wonderful town of Ravello. If you want any more info you can PM me.
