I am staying in Sorrento for five days this coming August. I have already planned a boat trip to Capri, and plan on doing the gondola ride to the top and the blue grotto (not sure what else there is to see there - suggestions welcome). I also want to see Pompeii, and definitely Positano. As I have five full days, I plan on staying in Sorrento one day, Capri is another day, and then Pompeii/Naples is another. So I have two free days to explore the rest of the coast. Any reccommendations on how to get around from Sorrento/which towns I MUST go to? (As mentioned before, Positano is a must for me, not sure how to get there yet though). Thanks!
Some Italian friends told us not to miss Ravello, and they were right. It is dead gorgeous, with astonishing views. We had a car, so I'm not sure how you get there, but there must be a bus. Even the climb up into the hills to get there was spectacular.
Positano and Ravello.
Our 2 favorites
Here are the current bus timetables for Sorrento - Positano - Amalfi and Amalfi - Ravello. http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXV.pdf Maybe do the return Amalfi (and/or Positano) - Sorrento trip by sea.
We enjoyed a boat ride to Positano and back to Sorrento much more than the bus.
You may want to consider spending one day at Pompeii and one day in Naples. I liked Positano when I was there several years ago. On Capri you could also take the Phoenecian Steps down from Anacapri to Capri. Have Fun.
You can take the bus to Positano from right in front of the train station. Takes about an hour, sit on the side away from the driver for best view. Get off at the second Positano stop. Then just walk down the hill to town. Think you can also take boat from Sorrento to Positano but we did not do that.
Take the chairlift in AnaCapri (in Capri). Fabulous views. We stay in Positano which is very central on the Amalfi coast. You can take a ferry or Sita bus anywhere. Ravello is a must. To get there you must take a ferry or bus to the town of Amalfi and the a bus from there. If you are feeling adventuresome take the Walk of the Gods. Go to Amalfi, take the bus to Montopertuso where you can start the walk. About 3 hours to Nocelle. There you can get a quick bus to Positano and teh a Sita bus or ferry back to Sorrento. Again, amazing views.
Have a great time.
Thanks everyone!! Appreciate all the help
I need to highjack this thread a moment. Sorry Jaime, but I don't think you did get enough, concrete consensus from this thread so far,...
------------------------------------------------ At this point we have one or two votes each for: Car, Bus, Boat, Chairlift On the TV series, Rick hired a driver (cab) to take the cliff-side road on through Positano and onto Amalfi town, getting some great footage of traffic snarls along the way. So which is it? Is this good rental car country or not? Who's stayed in Positano and has a story about finding parking near their accommodations?
Parking in any of the towns can be tough, I would avoid a car in most seasons unless where you are staying has parking some place. As far as what to do, Positano and some gelato, Amalfi and some Limoncello, Ravello and some more gelato and some Limoncello, the drive and people watching - especially watch the local drivers, highly entertaining. Day trip to Capri, day trip to Pompeii or Herculano, day trip down to Paestum, day trip to Sorrento (and gelato or Limoncello or both at any of those...). For transport, depends on the season, if the buses aren't crazy packed, they are a good option. The ferry can also be fun. If neither of those is possible, I'd look at a private driver, but I'd also look for others to share the ride and reduce the cost.
