Amalfi Coast Trip

I am planning a trip to the Amalfi coast at the end of April, first of May. I was thinking of spending a couple nights in Sorrento and then getting a limo ride to Ravello for one night to enjoy the views from above and then a bus to Amalfi and either a bus or ferry to Positano for 2 nights. Does anyone know if one can take the open air tourist bus from Ravello to Amalfi too? We will be travelling with some luggage so is this all quite manageable? Is it worth the extra hassles to have one night in Ravello or should we just take a day trip to Ravello from Sorrento or Positano?

We could switch our routes from Sorrento to Positano and then to Ravello but I was thinking that on the return to Naples, it would be easier to get from Positano to Naples than from Ravello to Naples with our luggage. I am researching using the ferry but would welcome any ideas. We would have 5 nights in the Amalfi area.

Any other suggestions for the Amalfi area would be welcomed. We do plan to take the bus trip from Sorrento to Salerno and back to enjoy the coastal views and at some point the ferry to Amalfi to visit this town for a few hours and will visit Capri from our cruise.

Need more info.

Do you cruise before Naples (AC) or after?

How many pieces of luggage do you have? You can take them on the ferry
2-3 euro per bag.

Are you aware that Positano is basically up and down hill. It's built into the side of a cliff.

For what you want to see, Amalfi may make a better base transportation wise.
It's where you change bus lines.

We can help better if we have some answers.

We are taking the cruise before Naples. We actually dock in Salerno at one point and are taking the trip to Capri from there.

As far as the Amalfi Coast part of our trip, so far I have 2 nights booked in Sorrento. We arrive there after a day travelling from Naples via Pompeii and Vesuvius with a driver. We will take the buses along the Amalfi drive to Salerno and back. Possibly a combination with the hydrofoil. I know that we change in Amalfi but we won't have any luggage for this trip. From Sorrento I have a driver to get us to Ravello for one night.

From Ravello we will need to do public transport with a bus to Amalfi and ferry to Positano. We have one bag each. I know Amalfi would be easier but I really want to go to Positano. We will have two nights there. I was thinking of staying in the village on the top of the hill and read that then we should take the bus but maybe it is easier with luggage to stay closer to the beach and use the ferry from Amalfi.
From Positano I am wondering if there is a ferry we take to Naples to get the train to Florence or from my reading it seems that we can take a ferry to Salerno and then a train from there to Florence directly.

I would recommend staying in Sorrento for cost and convenience's sake. You can get to and from Naples really easily. You can also get to Capri, Pompei and the Amalfin Coast easily. It's also generally a bit more affordable and has more to do than Positano, Amalfi or Ravello. If money is not an issue and you absolutely want to spend the night in one of the towns on the Amalfi Coast by all means go for it. We however found that doing a daytrip from Sorrento with a driver/guide was sufficient for us. You get all the wonderful views and scenery but can then relax, eat and sleep in more down to earth Sorrento. Rick Steves has drivers he recommends for this.

Okay, you have the driver to ravello covered.

From Ravello- Amalfi is around 25 min.
by bus.

Amalfi- Positano by ferry is 25 min.
If the ferry is not running, very possible at this time of year, the bus will get you to Positano. There is a stop at the top, ch. Nuovo, second stop comming from Amalfi. Time is about 50 minutes.

You can get a 3 day pass for the bus 16 euros. Since you will be on and off the bus, it will save you time and money.

I worry that you may have to take the bus instead of the ferry to Salerno.
Hopefully the ferry will be running.
You would use the Piazza Concordia stop. It's by the train station in Salerno.

Lots of info here http://www.positano.com

Edit: be aware this is a holiday weekend in Italy. May first is like our Labor Day.
It may be crowded.

It seems like too much Amalfi Coast to me, especially since you're coming off a week on a boat. As one other post suggests, although there are significant road and traffic impediments to getting around the AC, it is totally unnecessary to change hotels twice (three hotels) to do this location justice. In particular, Ravello is lovely, but has no beach and is slightly out of the way. Staying there will be like being on the boat, but without the nightclubs.

You didn't mention Pompeii, Naples, or Herculaneum. (Or Paestum, for that matter.) If you care about those, you should not stay anyplace else but Sorrento. In fairness, Sorrento isn't nearly as attractive as the AC towns you name, but it is well-located for transportation. We spent all five nights in Sorrento, and were glad we did. It would help if your profile showed your home country, so we knew (for example) if you never get to see the ocean. You might also say how often you go to Europe.

You might wish to explore whether your limo company has to (I mean, as a business necessity) allow for the car to return to Sorrento "empty." That would mean that you are spending money that you're not benefiting from. Ravello is quite far from either Salerno or Sorrento. I personally don't think the bus from Sorrento to Salerno (I mean, all-the-way) is worth the time lost from touring.

So we actually live on the coast and I love the ocean but not necessarily to lay on beach. Just coastal areas to see views, dine, people watch etc. Have FOMO so afraid I'll miss out on something if don't go to different places- might curse later, hauling my bag around. Just want to see all the things everyone else thought were magical. E.g View from Ravello Villas and Gardens at sunset
I do know it's a holiday weekend so busy another reason to allow time to get places. Hoping for some ferry travel but will manage buses if we have to.
We are doing tour of Pompeii and Vesuvius.
on our way to Amalfi. We will have done and headed to Florence so not possessed to have huge amount of time in Naples and will come from there.

Thanks for all suggestions and website info.
