Amalfi Coast to Siciliy or Vice Versa?

We are planning a trip to Italy including Venice, Rome, Amalfi Coast and Sicily. We could start in Venice and then train to Rome and Naples; driver to Amalfi and then on to Sicily or do the reverse. Is one way better than the other? Any ideas from people who know the area and have traveled there (particularly Amalfi Coast and Sicily). Thanks so much :)

What time of year? How much time do you have?

Naples and Palermo, Sicily, are the most hectic cities on your list. Palermo's traffic, in particular, can be a bit intimidating if you aren't from a city like New York or Boston. I'd tend to start in the north in Venice. (Also, it can be more challenging to fly out of Venice because of the flight schedules.) However, if you're planning something like a May/June trip you might want to hit the southern cities first to avoid potentially very hot weather.

The reason I asked about the length of your trip is that Sicily is a large island and you'll need a good bit of time there. Having a car will make your visit more efficient, but it's still not a place to go for just a few days.

Flights are key.

Sicily is well connected to Rome by air, not so much with the airports near the other 2 locations (VCE or NAP).

It is probably best to leave Rome for last, if you fly home from Rome, but Sicily is easier to reach via air from Rome.

Sicily needs 8 days at the very least.

Use rome2rio.com to look for connections. I just looked at Naples-Catania, it shows both Alitalia and Easy Jet flights. There is also an airport in Palermo. The best way is to fly into one, traverse the island and fly out of the other. As the fellows have said, if you don't have at least a week, skip Sicily.

I concur. I have flown from Napoli to Sicilia fairly often, very easy to do. Be aware of domestic baggage restrictions.

Thanks for all the feedback! We are planning approximately 3 weeks for the entire trip in May. It looks like we may fly to London first then RyanAir or EasyJet to Siciliy (for a week) then on to Amalfi Coast and Rome, ending in Venice. Thanks for all the info.

It sounds like you're planning to spend some time in London too. That's too fast-paced for me. Consider that you'll use/lose 1/2 day (maybe more) each time you move and "Sicily" isn't one destination. Here's why: Rome to Venice is about 3.5 hours on the train. But you'll need time to pack, breakfast and check out of the hotel, then about 1/2 hour to get to the train station and a few minutes there find and board your train (buy tickets in advance). In Venice, it could easily take you an hour to get from the station to your hotel. So count nights, not days, because however many nights you spend, you'll have one less day to sightsee, so 3 nights = 2days, for example.

London (3 nights) - 2 days while getting over jetlag.
Siciliy (7 nights) - probably about 5 full days, depending on what your plan is.
Amalfi (3 nights) - 2 days, just enough for a taste
Rome (4 nights) - 3 days
Venice (3 nights) - 2 days
