Amalfi Coast & Surrounding Area...good itinerary?

Have 14 nights in Italy, plan to stay 5 nights in Sorrento/Amalfi Coast area & 9 nights in Rome. Would we best use our time if we split the 5 nights between Sorrento & Positano or just choose one? If split, which one would be recommended to visit first? Here's what we're planning while there: Day 1: Arrive Naples @ noon, transport to either Sorrento or Positano hotel & explore that town, recover from jetlag! Day 2: Visit Pompeii (could this be combined w/pasteum?) Day 3: Visit Pasteum Day 4: Take bus ride down coast, visit towns, take ferry back Day 5: Visit Capri
Day 6: Depart for Rome

Just got back from Italy and we did visit everything you would like to do. You will love it and it is beautiful. When you go to Capri take the boat ride and as you arrive in Capri ask for Taxi 22. Pasquale was wonderful in taken my family around the island for the day. He stopped along the way and explain everything.Your itinerary is good just realize that you will be in each place quite awhile to see everything. Enjoy and have fun

Maybe spend one night on Capri instead of splitting nights between Positano and Sorrento? This will allow you time to see more on Capri and relax, especially after the day trippers leave the island in late afternoon. Don't miss the chair lift to the top of Anacapri, and the garden at the Alex Munte house (close to where you would take the chair lift up) is very nice with great views, too. A ride up to Anacapri in a convertible taxi is fun; actually the convertible taxis are fun for any travel on Capri. Maybe do Pompeii on the way back to Rome? Haven't visited Pasteum, but one could enjoy Pompeii for a minimum of a half day if just seeing a few highlights, or an entire day (or longer ) to see more, depending on one's fascination. Could be good to separate the visits to the two ancient sites for variety. Good plan to bus down the Amalfi Coast and take the boat back, as you'll enjoy both view points. Go to Ravello if you can, as it offers some of the best views/photo ops. Are you planning a few day trips out into the region while you are in Rome? Nine nights is very generous for taking in the sights in just Rome proper. Unless you are traveling Business Class or are blessed with sleeping well in coach, I'd be tempted to allow an extra chill-out day on the very front, maybe staying at La Agave Hotel in Positano (or somewhere in Sorrento), just relaxing from jet lag, doing some light touring of the city, enjoying a relaxing lunch and taking in the hotel's fantastic views/pool, then tackling the rest of the tour. You are wise (and lucky) to do a 14-day trip. Happy travels.

I would recommend spending all five nights in Sorrento, as it seems to be a better base for your day trips. Just my opinion. On Day 2, it's probably possible to combine Pompeii and Paestum, but it would be a really long day. I think it's best to give each its own day and give yourself some breathing space. To get from Sorrento to Paestum , depending on when you're in Italy, you may be able to take a ferry to Salerno and then a bus to Paestum. Otherwise it's the long (but pretty) bus ride down the Amalfi coast. And if you do that, you may want to take the ferry (instead of the bus again) the next day for your visit to Amalfi and Positano.
Have fun!

We're going in late April. Hoping Ferries will be running by then?? All great info, I think I'll keep a day each for Pompeii & Pasteum. Has anyone stayed at The Royal in Sorrento? Have also read great things about Hotel Palazzo Murat in Positano...should we end up splitting our time between teh two towns. Look amazing if we could swing it. Charlene...I am worried that 9 nights in Rome would be too much, mainly because it is a big, congested city and that does wear on you after a while. Maybe we'll do 6 nights Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, 8 nights Rome. Sites of interest for us from Rome: Borghese Gallery, Forum, Ostia Antica Ruins, Colosseum, Appian way, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Vatican, Trajan's Market, Palinetine Hill, Spanish Steps, St. Peter's Basillica, Sistine Chapel, and possibly a day trip to Orvieto?? How many days would it take to cover all of this, assuming we use 1 day to Orvieto? Any hotel suggestions for Rome? Joanne - since you just visited & saw the same sights we're interested near Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, may I ask how many nights you stayed there and in what town you made your homebase, and what hotel if it was good?

I would think you could see all of your listed sites in 5 days. So if I were you, I would spend the other 4 nights somewhere else in Italy. There's just so much to see. If you haven't been to Venice, that would be a great choice. And if you haven't purchased your airline tickets yet, you could fly into Naples, and then fly out of Venice. Or you could take your day trip to Orvieto at the end of your time in Rome, spend the night there, then spend 4 days driving around Tuscany, possibly returning to Rome the final night to catch your flight home. Or you could go to Cinque Terra or Florence. It all depends on what you've already seen, and what you're interested in (museums? hiking?). Have fun planning!

We stayed at the Villa La Tartana, a B&B in Positano for seven nights, I think it was $250 euro a night but that was for the four of us and a baby, not bad. great location and staff wonderful, you can go to internet and look up B&B's in Positano and find it.
