My ignorance is showing. I don't know what you mean by living document or why you included the link.

I haven't been to Sardinia. Overall your itinerary is very rushed for my taste.

May 1 - don't miss the national archaeology museum in Naples as a companion sight to Pompeii
May 2 - not sure you can see them all in one day. Better to take bus to the top of town, then ferry back to Sorrento from the bottom.
May 3 - several people have commented that Capri is not a great day trip, better to overnight or skip.
May 4 - taking an overnight ferry? which night? or all-day transfer? Either way, allow ample time to get from Sorrento to Naples ferry station in time to board.
May 13 - how are you getting to Naples? The simplest, most efficient solution would be to fly home from Sicily, probably Palermo, since with only about 4 days there, you won't have nearly enough time to sightsee your way to Catania.

Two things:

  1. Sicily really deserves more than 3 days. It is a big island, there's a lot to see. You won't have scratched the surface in 3 days.
  2. May 1 is Labor Day, a big holiday in Italy. It falls on Sunday this year making for a holiday weekend. Wherever you go it will be very busy. Plan accordingly.

May 1: this is a major holiday (Labor Day). Please check opening hours of whatever you intend to visit. Generally Pompeii deserves at least 3 hours.
May 3rd: Capri is fine as a day trip from the mainland (not sure where you are staying, but you can visit Capri on a day excursion from Naples, or Sorrento, or from Positano, or Amalfi).
May 4/5: I've been to Sardinia a few times. But how long is taking you to get to Olbia? Are you taking a night ferry? How about flying? It might be just as cheap and you can be there in less than one hour. To me the ferry makes sense only if you are an Italian taking your own car to Sardinia. But since you are renting, why bother with a long ferry trip?
May9/10: same observation here. Why is it taking you 2 days to get from Sardinia to Palermo? Are you taking a night ferry again?
May10/13: Your Sicily stay is rather short. I can't even fathom Sicily for less than 8 days.
Check EasyJet or Volotea for flights between Sardinia and Naples (NAP) or Palermo (PMO).
Sardinia international airports are: Cagliari (CAG), Olbia (OLB), Alghero (AHO).

If you keep a day trip to Capri in your plans, find out when the earliest boat leaves Sorrento for the island, and be on it. (I'm assuming you're planning to stay in Sorrento.) The last return is fairly early . . .I'm remembering around 6 p.m. when we were there. We didn't know that until we lined up to buy our outbound tickets. The ride takes time. Then, you have to get up to the town from the marina. It was time for lunch when we finally arrived. We felt that it was very rushed to see both Capri and Anacapri. BTW, we liked the latter better.

Sorry about the confusion. I'm taking plans to fly to the islands, so will be arriving the same day. My logic is flying in the morning then spending the day in that city I am in. Can someone suggest a better itinerary for my 2 week journey? Or is this unrealistic?

Here is my modified centenary. Should I just be dumping Sicily?

This small town is well known for its wine and food traditions, closely linked to its farming and pastoral history. Excellent wine is also produced here thanks to cultivation of Cannonau grapes, including a wide range of aperitif, table and dessert wines. Still today some traditional dishes are prepared here, such as “culurgiones”, a sort of raviolo prepared with a water and flour base and filled with a potato and cheese filling.

or
Visit Oliena (30 Min drive)
Oliena is a large farming village well known for its scenic beauties and its wine. The area produces an excellent Cannonau. This wine was mentioned also by Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio in a letter dated 1909: “Haven’t you ever heard speak of the Nepente of Oliena? Ah, what a pity – I’m sure that were you to taste just one drop, you’d never wish to be without it”.

Instead of backtracking to Palermo, why not fly out of Catania? You can have another look at Mount Etna while you wait in the boarding area.

Hi Morvegil,

Yes now is better your itinerary in terms of not making things so rush. I live in Palermo. I can tell you that traveling south Italy is kind of no stress when things do not work! Anything can make your trip slower .. things that you do not expect happens so be ready to be patient sometime ;) But is very worth for culture spots, people, food and money!

I can recommend as well to take one way flights, like fly into catania or palermo and fly back in the opposite way, so you will have more time.
Here some comments to your sicilia part:

May 8th:
Fly to Palermo
May 9th:
Site See in Palermo
Plenty of things to see.. but in case you don't know visit:
visit Santa Maria dello Spasimo (incredible feeling in a half destroyed church without the roof, where now classic and jazz concerts take place)- visit the palazzo branciforte asking to visit the 'Deposito dei pegni di santa rosalia' (google it)

May 10th:
Sicily (Rental Car)
Drive to Bar Vitelli (3 hours)
Driving to Bar vitelli from palermo.. you Must stop at Cefalu! you cannot pass by and don't see cefalu which is more worth then Taormina..
Drive to Taormina (45 mins)
May 11th:
Vist Mt.Etna
May 12th:
Drive to Syracuse (1.5 Hours)
May 13th:
Drive to Ragusa (1.5 Hours)
Stop in Noto for the unesco sites with barocco art..
Drive to Palermo (4 hours) - Plan back to Naples.
Don't drive back.. flights one way are cheap as well.. fly back from Catania.
May 14th:
Fly Home

I would suggest also to see the Aeolian Islands, which are fantastic! Stromboli island is unique in the world, and from there you can take a ship to naples, but you have no time unless you go to the islands instead of east sicily .. Palermo-cefalu-aeolian islands-naples... ships are twice per week.. so maybe this do not suite your trip.. but for next time spend some days in this amazing archipelago.

PS: Eat in Sicily:
in palermo a typical very affordable restaurant is calles Ferro di Cavallo.. while in the historical center find the famous 'Focacceria da Francesco' (which located in a lovely hidden square)
Wherever you can try this food: Arancine alla carne or al burro - Cannoli with fresch ricotta (buy them only if fresh (the best is when they fill this pastry in front of you) - in palermo the Panelle e crocche' is also a special local food, simple and tasty with some lemon .

PS2: I born in Naples, is so beautiful city, probably the most beautiful gulf in Italy, if you walk in naples by yourself is not dangerous at all if you avoid to show jewellery, photo machine and anything with value.. you can bring just consider that is easy to be stolen by a scooter if you hang your stuff on the street side.. just keep it not reacheble ;)

Enjoy your trip, will be fabulous :)
