Amalfi Coast - Rent a car?

Hi everyone -

My fiancé and I will be spending a week on the Amalfi coast for our honeymoon in mid September. We are planning to stay in Praiano for 3 nights, Positano for 3 nights, and then Capri for a night before returning by boat to Naples.

I have heard very mixed opinions regarding renting a car to get to the coast and have for the trip. We want to explore the towns of Amalfi and Ravello in addition to Positano and Praiano.

We live in Los Angeles and are used to heavy traffic areas, and have also driven around Europe a ton, but know that Amalfi can be intense. Does anyone have any advice on this regard?

If we don't have a car, will it be easy to get from town to town? We both also get car sick easily so we are also not sure we would LOVE being on a packed bus around winding roads.

Thanks!

Rent the car. You may want to rethink staying in Positano and Praiano, they are very close together. I stayed at a great little hotel on the water in Praiano, with parking on premises, it's called La Maurella. You could take a short bus ride to Positano rather than try to,park there.

Ravello is gorgeous, be sure to go to the Cimbrone gardens.

One more beautiful spot if you find ancient temples romantic, and easy to reach with a car, is Paestum, near Salerno. Perhaps spend a couple of your Positano nights there and add a night to Praiano.

Don't try to drive to Capri. A boat would be more scenic. Dryer, too.

Positano is magical... but, I agree w the Positano/Praiano comment. They border each other. And you'll pay a ton to park the car in Positano. On the other hand, there's no easy way to get to the coast without a car. If you're flying in/out Naples? Train to salerno and rent a car in salerno... One week for a honeymoon on the coast-including Capri- is perfect (I did it). I wouldn't spend my week travelling around. You'll want to relax after the hussle bussle of a wedding. Make sure you go up to the top of Positano to see the cemetary. We took the bus up , with sandwiches and wine, and walked down. You might think about renting a car "for the day" or think Ferries: ... Travelmar (tel. +39 089 872950) run connections between Salerno, Minori, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento.
Enjoy!

If you like walking then do the Pathway of the Gods from Bomerano to Nocelle. The views are amazing and it is an easy walk.

I agree with the others about Positano and Praiano being so close . We have been to the Amalfi Coast three times and have stayed in Ravello each time at Punta Civita. It's very well priced and the views are stunning.

As for the car rental, yes rent it. Just make sure that you get a small car so that you can navigate the oncoming buses and fit into the tight parking on the Amalfi Coast.

Happy honeymooning.
