Amalfi coast question

We will be traveling throughout Italy next spring for three weeks. Out current itinerary has us spending six days on the Amalfi Coast which we are excited about. As it stands now we will spend three days In Capri and three days in Positano. My question is would we better served spending six days in a place like Sorrent as a home base and traveling to Capri and Positano for day trips along with other places or is set up well as we have it now?

It depends on what you're interested in. Capri is simply magical early mornings and in the evenings when the day trippers are not there. Same for Positano. That said, if you're just looking for a day trip to each, then setting up a base in Sorrento makes sense. Enjoy!

If you plan to see Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Museum in Naples etc, then Sorrento is a much better base.

If you plan to just 'be there' then your plan is fine.

Depends what you want to do with your time there, that determines which is better.

Just to emphasize what was said in the posts above, Capri and Positano are not convenient for seeing places like Pompeii or Paestum. From Capri you can get to Naples or Sorrento easily, but boats to other destinations are sparse in summer and may be non-existent in spring. From Positano, you can get the bus to Amalfi, where you in turn change to a bus to Ravello or Salerno.

So, a few days of relaxing in Capri and Positano, and the ability to see them away from the day-tripping hoards, may be just what you want. But these aren't good bases for seeing other places easily.

as far as costs go, I think it would be cheaper with sorrento as a base.( if that is of concern?) there are more accomodation, restaurant and shopping options in sorrento. it is a great base to stay and day trip from. both capri and positano are crowded ( at least in the day) tourist spots, by comparison.( even in spring- we have been twice to both, in spring)
when we have been at capri and positano, you feel that anything you buy is going to be expensive, whereas in sorrento ( while there are still lots of tourists) you feel like you have more options to choose from.

hope this helps.

We used Positano for our week long stay and were able to use the ferries to get where we wanted to go except we had a tour booked to Pompeii that picked us up at our flat in Positano and transported us to and from Pompeii including a guide. Evenings and mornings are beautiful, and quiet, and you can soak in just being there!!

Thanks to all who replied. It looks like our original plan of staying in Capri and Positano is our best bet for what we want.
