Amalfi Coast Pompeii and Sicily in about 8 days end of March

This will be our 4th trip to Italy yes I know time wise its insane but no choice due to work schedule. If we have to pick just one or two places which one would be the best logistically speaking ? We are celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary end of March and like to be in Italy. Trying to figure out logistics like which airport to fly in, rent car Any tips would be great. We are flying into Italy out of germany so airfares are cheap.

Sicily is large and takes about 2.5 weeks to cover. So you would have to chose one place to visit. I recommend Ortigia or Palermo if you do included Sicily. Or of you only visit Sicily combine those two places.
You could have a nice trip to Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. Since you are located in Europe you can easily return. Amalfi Coast with Pompeii plus Sicily seems like too much for eight days.

If you choose Sicily you can fly to Palermo or Catania depending on which side of the island you want to visit. Palermo is on the western side, Catania on the eastern.
Palermo and Monreale will keep you busy for at least 3 days. After Palermo you can then take trips to various locations in the western side, like Cefalù, Segesta, Selinunte, Erice, Castellammare, Trapani, and much more.
On the eastern side you can visit Taormina, Siracusa, Noto, Modica, Ragusa, etc.
Having a car in Sicily it will make it more efficient, although you won’t need a car while in Palermo for sure (a car is not recommended while there, as it is the most congested city in Italy and probably Europe).
8 days are not enough to see all of Sicily, so you’ll need to choose.
Pompeii is not in Sicily, it is near Naples, so the best airport is Naples. You don’t need a car there. There is the Circumvesuviana commuter train that can take you around to Pompeii and also Sorrento.

Aside from the usual warnings about car usage in Italy, remember that most contracts specifically prohibit going on a ferry with the car.

It would help to understand your specific wishes. These marine/resort areas can have less activity in March, and certainly less ferries scheduled. But are you interested in luxury hotels or bargains? Is the beach (cold water) important? How may of the five ancient sites (actually more) on the 5-day ticket (option) will you be going to?

I personally recommend against a second place, if you go to Sicily. But in order to stay on the AC you almost have to spend the last night in Rome. (Especially off season, when there are fewer flights from Naples.) If I lived in Rhode Island, I would go to the Caribbean in March. I love Pompeii, but the "AC" destination is not "rich enough" for such a short trip. And I don't like the choice of month. (My opinion would not be shared by the legions of limey Sorrento repeaters who seek a glimpse of sun all year long.)

I will not be in Rhode Island but in Germany during the month of March/April. I would never go to the Caribbean as I love culture and not sitting on a beach. I like the choice of month since I like to avoid too many tourists and the heat. I was in Italy before in the summer and no thanks. I will be in Venice next month during the colder season. I do agree with the logistical issues. We concluded after reading here to change our plans and fly into Rome rent a car and go left first to visit a vineyard we had been to twice already. After 2 nights we will drive down to Pompeii to see the ruins and drive to the Amalfi coast where we will stay until our flight back out of Rome to Germany. We have to be back Easter sunday. Sicily has to wait until another year or maybe December 2023. Thank you all for the input it's nice to get other people's perspectives.

We don't get many March reports here, but parking is really scarce on the AC. Unlike Orvieto, Pompeii does not have a multistory parking garage with escalators. As I said, it is beyond risky to wake up in the AC and fly out of Rome the same day.

How about Sardinia in December. We are already in Florence and have booked all November. Thinking about Sardinia, are most restaurants closed , like Tuscany.
