We want to see the drive on the Amalfi Coast and especially see Paestum. We thought we would stay overnight one night somewhere on the coast and are considering Positano but we can't figure out how to fit Paestum in. Our base is in Pozzouli where we are staying with our daughter so we can take the train from there. We are going at the end of October. Any suggestions?

If Paestum is your main destination I'd suggest staying in Salerno. It is a city - not much romance -but you can rent a car there to drive to Paestum. Paestum is definately worth it. We loved it there!

In May, we stayed in Positano one night and drove to Paestum to spend the next night. We loved the Hotel Villa Rita in Paestum(wonderful owner and employees, gorgeous "oasis-style" grounds, good hearty dinner) and of course loved being able to walk down the road and view the ancient greek columns at night AND in the morning. In Positano, we splurged and stayed in the Suite at the top of the Hotel Savioa. Unforgetable! However, many people simply drive the fast highway to Paestum from Amalfi, view the greek columns and head back. I would NOT recommend the coast road from Salerno to Paestum (not scenic, and there was a garbage strike during our trip - UGLY!!!).
