i'm planning on spending three weeks in italy in late may to mid june. i'll be flying into venice and out of rome and also covering milan, cinque terre, pisa, naples and pompeii which will take about two weeks. i would like to spend the final week in the amalfi coast and sicily. do i only have time for one or the other? which one should i focus on? i'm mainly interested in going to capri in the amalfi coast but i dont know about sicily. is sicily worth going to? what are the sicily must-sees? i'm mainly interested in spending time on the beach. which destination has the nicer beaches/blue waters? how much would it cost to book a flight from rome to sicily? what's the cheapest website to go to book? is there any cheap student hostels in sicily? i could not find any. thanks so much for your advice!
Agreed. Sicily is just too much.
And since you (didn't) ask, Milan is "out of the way" unless there is a particular reason to go there. I would add a day or two in Verona, which is lovely and different from the other places you mention, and much closer to Venice. Also agreed that Florence is well worth 2 or 3 days. Pisa can easily be a day trip on your way from Florence to CT (check your luggage at the train station), and then on to Rome and the Amalfi coast, south to Naples and Pompeii.
Haven't been, myself, but have heard from friends and on the various forums that Sicily is difficult (and time-consuming) to get around unless you rent a car, while the Amalfi coast is easy using public transportation.
