It may depend on time of year, how much time you have for the visit, and where else you're going in Italy?
For sure amalfi coast. i have been to both, amalfi coast is the drive of a lifetime hopefully by bus.
The towns along can be visited by ferry or by road. Each town is very diff and still very beautiful and all very worth it to visit. Some for beach, banother for views and shopping, another for the villagevand cathedral. Ferry along the mediterranean memorable for sure. And for sur very romantic if u want it to be. Amalfi also warrants more time hopefully u have at least 3 night better if more.
bw,
Both areas are wonderful. The answer will likely depend on where else you'll be travelling in Italy. If most of your visit will be focused in the north, it would make more sense to visit the Cinque Terre. If you'll mostly be in Rome, then either area is easily reached. Another point to consider is that transportation is a bit more challenging in the south.
Another factor in the decision may be availability of lodging. By all reports here, the Cinque Terre gets booked up fast. The Amalfi Coast is certainly popular, but there doesn't seem to be the same degree of difficulty in finding a place to stay (particularly if you're flexible about which town).
