We are trying to decide on places to visit. Will be seeing Venice (3-4 days) and Rome (about a week). We would like to add another week before heading over to Greece. Please advice which would be your choice based on the itinerary so far and the fact we will have two boys with us ages 10 and 12.
Thank you!
The boys would probably have more fun in the Cinque Terre, those exciting and scenic hikes.
I agree that Cinque Terre would be a great choice. But, there is also a lot that the kids would love in the Amalfi area: climbing Vesuvius, visiting Pompeii, the Napoli Sotterranea, the beaches, boats, hiking, Amalfi Drive, etc.
With an extra week, you could even squeeze in both, although it wouldn't be quite as relaxing as a week in either spot. Some on this site (I haven't been there yet - heading both places this summer) might even say that a week in Cinque Terre is too much.
If you are flying from Rome to Athens, you should stay in the area, so as not to spend all your time on trains. The CT is out of the way for where you are headed. Sorrento is a nice town and a good location to see the islands and the Amalfi coast. From Sorrento you can take a day trip to Pompeii. Another day take the bus along the Amalfi coast. Your boys would probably love the ride, just make sure they sit on the right side of the bus going down the coast. It's what we call an "E" ticket ride. Visit Amalfi, is a nice little town, and then spend the rest of the day in Positano, which has a good beach. Then there is Capri. Easy to catch a boat there from Sorrento. I think the boys would like the trip to the blue grotto. I didn't have time to get to Ischia when there last, but I understand it's also a beach resort. Naples is also just a boat/train trip away. Plenty to keep you busy for a week.
