We (2 couples) are headed to Positano for a week in October from Naples airport. We can not check into our villa until the 2nd night, and I am looking for a good one night stay between Naples and Positano, or any special place in the vicinity. Any ideas for a one night stay before our week begins in Positano? We will have our luggage, and coming from Houston, landing around noon in Naples. Sorrento, Ravello, Praiano? Thank you!

Even though it is not exactly in route I would vote for Ravello.
It is a special place and spending the night there would be nice.
Sorrento is the other obvious choice ; logistically it makes more sense and could be a middle stop in a sense on your journey.
Your journey is not really far though if landing at noon so really not an issue, you can visit Sorrento another day during your week and Sorrento for 1 night is not really special like Ravello for one night would be. Not many people spend the night there so would be cool being one of few in the town when the day trippers leave.
Compared to Praiano or any of the other towns along the coast with the exception of Ravello ; I would opt for Sorrento instead I think.

Sorrento is a sensible choice and good place to simply wind down after a day of traveling. Settle in, watch the sun go down and enjoy a nice dinner. It’s an easy ferry ride to Positano the next day.
A one night treat at a real nice hotel in Naples is also an option. Naples may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it’s a shame to blow through without seeing it. You can pick up the ferry from Naples pretty easily too. You already have a laid back week ahead, why not start the week with a little action?

Two choices, private driver to Ravello, or to Sorrento by this bus.

Using the bus to Sorrento, then enables you to take the ferry to Positano the next day.
Ravello to Positano will require another private driver or 2 separate busses or bus and ferry combination.

I love Naples, but if you've never been before, it would not be a gentle introduction to southern Italy.

Agree with above that to get to Ravello from the Naples Airport ; a private driver really would be best and that will add to your expenses vs. Sorrento being much easier to reach.
For getting to your place in Positano the next day though, it will be easy.
I assume your villa will be closer to the road than the beachfront in Positano if so, with luggage you do not want to arrive by ferry.
I would take the SITA bus that runs constantly between Amalfi town and Ravello and then when that bus ends, you board another SITA bus bound for Sorrento. Since that bus starts in Amalfi town right near to where the bus from Ravello drops you off the transfers will be simple.
The SITA bus bound for Sorrento will make a stop in Positano.
There will be room for your luggage in the cargo hold in the bus and the bus ride will be very scenic.
I would not pay a driver for that journey, of course if your villa is out of town you may need to anyway.
