The Amalfi coast is superb! Make sure to go to Positano and spend some time - it's awesome. On food, there are great rests. everywhere and we also love to go the local deli and have them pick out great local stuff for us to sit out on patio at room overlooking ocean or wherever and picnic.

Sorrento is at the other end of all of the Amalfi coast towns. A private driver is probably the most convenient way to get between the two towns. You could multi task and do a tour of some of the other towns as you are heading towards Sorrento. Each town has its own personality and it is hard to know what you would prefer until you see them. For example, I thought I would love Positano. And it is beautiful but I preferred Ravello and Amalfi town.

As far as other things to do- hiking is big. There are some less strenuous hikes or the big Footpath of the Gods hike. Enjoy the waterfront. Sorrento does not have traditional beaches but it does have docks for sunbathing and you then take stairs down into the water.

Thanks we will be there in March so I am not too worried about getting beach time in. Does anyone know if the ferries run in March? I'd love to see the coast from the water.

Hi Lydia,

I would base in Ravello, Amalfi or Positano over Salerno. It's pretty far removed from the dramatic scenery of the Amalfi coastline, especially in March if there is fog.

As for food, I would highly recommend spending a day doing the cooking class at Mama Agata's in Ravello. Amazing!

I would not count on any boat rides in March. Fewer crowds though!

It all depends on what you are hoping to do from Salerno.....it is a charming town with great transportation connections.....

If you want views and scenery, then maybe move to Amalfi (its what I prefer for the coastal towns, because it is a transportation hub).......

but if you only are on the Amalfi coast for 2 nights, I don't think the ferries will be working that frequently in March, I would stay on the coast, maybe Amalfi and then visit Ravello and explore Amalfi the only full day you are there, and then get a private driver to take you to Positano and then drop you off in Sorrento......

These suggestions can only mean so much when you don't share what you want to see.....

Maybe if you can swing it, stay in Sorrento (I can't believe I am suggesting a town I don't love at all) for the entire time, and then hire a driver for a day for the Amalfi coast....

We want to see some of the sights that one has to see - but mostly when we travel we just like to get a feel for what the locals do and are real foodies! Not looking for touristy things. I know I want to check out Vietri because I have a collection of those plates and love local ceramics. Amalfi or Rafello sound great for the 3rd night maybe and the Sorrento so we can see Pompei and catch the train to Rome on Sunday?

lydia,

For a great meal in Sorrento, you might try L' Antica Trattoria. It will probably be somewhat of a "splurge" for your budget, but the last meal I had there was fantastic.

"that one has to see" is different for every person......I don't ever need to go back to Sorrento, but other people swear by it....

If you want what the locals do, I would say keep Salerno and go eat at Ristorante CiCiRinella behind the duomo, AMAZING FOOD......since you have technically 2 full days between your 2 locations, (minus the parts of days you spend travelling)

I wouldn't switch locations 3 times in 4 nights, I would probably say it would be of great value to get a car/driver for your transition day and leave early, visit Amalfi and Ravello and then onto Positano and then they could drop you at your hotel in Sorrento, just to maximize your time that you have on the coast.....here's a plan that might work...

Day 1/night 1-arrive in Salerno, explore, duomo, historic center (not sure when you will be arriving, but if its early afternoon, a trip to Vietri might be great-though they do not make Vietri pottery there, the Vietri pottery is actually made in Tuscany-they have great hand crafted pottery in Vietri though!) Sleep in Salerno
Day 2/Night 2-visit Paestum (well preserved ancient Greek temples)and return in the evening, explore Salerno and eat at CiCiRinella (YOU MUST) Sleep in Salerno
Day 3/Night 3-Leave early for Amalfi with private driver, explore the city, visit Ravello, then off to Positano, and end in Sorrento for dinner, sleep in Sorrento
Day 4/Night 4-ferry to Capri for the day, return to Sorrento, sleep in Sorrento
Day 5-depart Sorrento, store luggage at the station or at the ruins, and back to Rome...

This is an action packed trip, but if you have the stamina and desire to see all of these things, it seems to be the most streamlined for you....

Ken mentioned L'Antica Trattoria in Sorrento. From Salerno, you can go to Paestum for a day (train, bus or private car).

That's right I read Ken's and was thinking it was in Salerno. Perfect! Everyone has been so helpful. I think we have it figured out. Still could use another restaurant in Salerno &/or Amalfi. Maybe a lunch place is Positano. Thanks again everyone!!!

I have a bunch of Salerno restaurant recommendations!

So first is CiCiRinella....but you know that....
for pizza, Trianon, in Piazza Gioia Flavio as well as la Tombola right off the shopping corso, very close to the Station (like 1 or 2 blocks up if I remember correctly)
I am a fan of al Camminetto, on Via Roma, deep into the historic center....

for Gelato, Gelateria Nettuno on the lungomare (great during your afternoon stroll) or Gelateria Gerry on Via Giovanni Da Procida.....

and I'm only there for 4 nights, so I can't go try anything else, but I hear great things from friends of friends about Botteghelle 65 near the duomo....
