My husband and I are traveling Italy Aug 5th-12th, 2012 and we want to go to the beach for a couple days. Can anyone recommend lodging on the Amalfi Coast? Some people have recommended Cinque Terra for a beach visit. Any input on CT vs. Amalfi is welcomed! Thanks!
Michelle, We stayed at Hotel Torre de Milo in Maiori on the Amalfi coast and loved it. It's a little more "local" than the other places on the coast, but there is a boat you can get from there to the other towns, and on to Capri, which is fabulous. We stayed in Riomaggiore in the CT, and spent some time on the "beach" there. The real beach, and it is huge, is up at Monterosso, which has plenty of accomodation. We preferred the CT because we're hikers, and you can hike between the towns. If you're car / bus people rather than hikers, the Amalfi coast may be more your scene. Cheers!
Thanks David... what hotel did you stay at in CT? Would you recommend it? It will be my first time there, so am deciding which town to stay in. Sounds like Monterosso has the most options since it is the largest, but I have read good things about Vernazza and Manarola too.
We stayed in Riomaggiore, which we loved as it was more "local", or as RS puts it "workaday". More our style. We used Edi's Rooms (see RS) and had a place in the harbor which was amazing.
Thanks so much for the quick reply! Do you know if the trains b/w CT towns are covered my a Railpass? I am deciding whether to buy one or not, and am comparing point to point tix vs. a Railpass. I have never used the rail system... learning it has been a bit daunting. Am thinking of renting a car, but have read mixed reviews on that as well!
At this point in time you better go where you can get a reservation. It is going to be hard to find a place to stay this late.
Check out RoninRome 's website. He explains the transportation options ( trains/buses) thoroughly. Also much much more. Enjoy your trip.
Michelle, I've replied to several posts on the topic of places to stay in the Cinque Terre recently, so it's a bit hard to keep track of them. Hopefully I'm not repeating information that I've already listed. If you can't get a booking at Hotel Villa Steno or Hotel Pasquale in Monterosso, you could also check Hotel Villa Adriana or Hotel Porta Roca. The latter is a bit "pricey" so you may have to adjust your budget accordingly. You could also check the Monterosso website for a list of all the accommodations. I suggest Monterosso, as it's the largest of the five towns and therefore has the greatest number of Hotels and other accommodations. Cheers!
Thanks Ken - yes, that Villa Steno looks great! And they had an opening a day or two ago (via email)... we'll see if it's still there once we exhaust looking at some other places, and shore up the itinerary. Still considering Manarola or Riomaggiore. I realize Monterosso is the largest with the large beach, but the others sound more quaint perhaps?
