We are heading to Sorrento the last week of June for 3 days (really 2 1/2). Already have Pompeii scheduled. Question - would like to do Amalfi coast tour...only as far as Amalfi...and head back by boat. Possible? Should we do local bus at that time or think private tour? Boat back to Sorrento worth it? Thanks for help.

Yes, it is possible and seeing the coast line from bus one way and boat another makes perfect sense.
Would take the local SITA bus from Sorrento and just stop in Positano for a 5 hours or so before boarding the bus again to Amalfi in the afternoon.
More to see and much more area to cover in Positano than Amalfi so plan to spend the majority of your time there.
if you finish up Positano early, the extra time would allow you to take the SITA bus ride from Amalfi to Ravello and back to Amalfi to see Ravello, a town with an amazing view.
The ferry runs from some time in May to some time in Sept I think but even if those dates are a bit off it will be definitely be running late June unless some storm causing big waves is at sea.
obviously figure out when the last ferry is and make sure you don't miss it!
It does look much different from the water than the road but the option is seeing both is best.

Ditto ! The bus is an awesome experience and the boat back makes for an incredible view.
Your hotel/b&b will help you get to the correct bus to head towards Amalfi. When you arrive into Amalfi walk across the street on the water side and take a bus up to Ravello. We love the views from there.

We did the exact same thing! Scenery was fantastic, though I did get extremely car sick on the winding curves. Had to take the boat back!
