Amalfi Coast itinerary - Capri?

Hello, we are taking a guided tour in late September/early October to Italy (Florence 3 nights, Rome 3 nights, Amalfi coast 5 nights). The last 5 nights we are based in a hotel in Vietri sul Mare. The tour includes excursions to Montecassino, Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento and Pompei. We have one free day with an optional 10 hour excursion to Capri. We have been told it is full of tourists & we may want to consider other options. I’d appreciate some guidance on whether you’d recommend going to Capri or spending our free day somewhere else. We will need transportation. Thanks!

Everywhere on the AC will be full of tourists

Take a look at Paestum, easy train ride from Salerno.

Capri is crazy crowded- but so is the AC. We’ve been in October- we based in Sorrento and loved it. It’s a beautiful area- but definitely expect high crowds. We don’t think it’s as crowded as Cinque Terre- but it’s a close second

From Vietri sul Mare you can easily get to Salerno either by ferry or bus. From there it is easy to take the short train ride to Paestum to see the spectacular Greek and Roman ruins and visit the museum. You’ll find it uncrowded and interesting.

If you're staying at a beautiful hotel, perhaps a day to relax and just be there before the arduous trip back home? The AC area is beautiful but congested, and we found that transiting through the AC area to be exhausting, because there is no quick and efficient mode to get anywhere. Obviously your tour will move you, but you're still sitting in traffic en route. Perhaps a day without an early wake up and being on your feet all day? Just a thought. Enjoy your adventure!

Hi TJ,
Possibilities other than Capri include:

-Minori (Sal de Riso pastries plus other VG food options).
-Cetera: like Minori, this remains a less-overrun by commercial tourism kinda' place (restaurant Aqua Pazza).
-Ravello: needs no intro.
-Ischia isle: more interesting in my opinion, and far less crowded and costly than Capri; esp. suggest visiting Ischia Ponte village: excellent on several levels i.e. the castle i.e. some of the best restaurants i.e. some good beach areas.
-best-kept secret: the sunrise view from Scala looking down onto Ravello.
Good luck.
I am done. The end.
