Amalfi Coast itinerary

Hi all,

I am visiting Italy in late September/early October with my partner.
We're spending 3 nights in Rome before heading to Sorrento for 5 nights. Our rough itinerary so far is:

Day 1 - Train from Rome to Sorrento, visit Pompeii en route
Day 2 - Ferry to Positano AM, maybe Path of the Gods PM?
Day 3 - Day trip to Capri
Day 4 - Ferry to Amalfi, bus to Ravello. Walk back to Amalfi, ferry back to Sorrento
Day 5 - Sorrento
Day 6 - Fly home from Naples

My question is, I want to hike Path of the Gods but unsure whether to try and fit this into day 2 or 4. As Amalfi would be the base to get to both Ravello and Bomerano, perhaps day 4 but I would like to spend a few hours in Ravello so it would be a long day to try and fit in the hike too?
Also, if I were to splash out for a taxi one morning to reduce time on public transport, would it be best to use this on getting to Bomerano or Ravello? Can anyone suggest which other nearby villages would be worth trying to see too? Thanks!

I had some concerns about the bus schedule to Bomerano from Amalfi.....we were ferrying there from Salerno and needed a bit of time to wander before the bus. There was a BIG space between buses in the late morning (something crazy like a 10ish to 12:30, just checked it's one every hour ISH, but the 11 one didn't give us enough time so we had to do the 12:30) that meant we needed to wait in Amalfi to join the HUGE MASS of people to get on. To beat the crowds, I don't know if you would have time to do anything before. I would actually suggest, since it ends in Positano, to take an EARLY bus to Amalfi, don't worry about "seeing" Amalfi today, and get on one of the earlier (before many day trippers arrive in Amalfi) buses to Bomerano, doing the hike and then spending the afternoon in Positano. Then you would have time on Day 4 to do Amalfi and Ravello the same day.

I would say that the taxi would be PERFECT to take to Bomerano, the bus to Ravello is MUCH shorter.

Thanks Katherine, that's a great idea about doing the hike first and then exploring Positano.
I guess it would make more sense to get the ferry to Amalfi rather than Positano but I had been hoping to get the ferry to Positano to see the views, would this be a big loss? Thanks!

Since Amalfi is beyond Positano, if you are ferrying from Amalfi back to Sorrento one day you will still get the views, and there is a good chance the boat will stop at Positano anyway, so you will get a closer view too.

The ferry TO Amalfi that Path of the Gods day might put you in the hordes of day trippers as the boat doesn't start as early as the bus. You have to decide which is more important, twice along the coast via boat, or possibly getting a head start on the ferry passengers for an early bus to Bomerano (or you could ferry and taxi whenever you want! haha)>

Hi, we will be in Positano for 4 nights in 2 weeks. Our "schedule" is as follows:

5/24 Day 6 Train to Naples, train to Salerno, ferry to Positano

5/25 Day 7 Pompeii with Mondo shared tour;

5/26 Day 8 Capri and Anacapri

5/27 Day 9 Amalfi and Ravello. In Ravello visit Villa Rufulo and Cimbrone

May I ask why you were planning on walking downhill from Ravello to Amalfi? Is it a pretty walk? Someone mentioned that was their least favorite part of the trip. IS is difficult or ugly? Do you know if the buses run frequently between Amalfi and Ravello? Are they crowded?

This is the first schedule I found, but I am sure there is a "more official" one...looks like its every hour, and with most things, it will get busier and more crowded as the day goes on.....if you're not planning on lunching or anything else in Ravello that would need to be later in the day, getting it done earlier would be less busy than later....
