My husband and I are planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast this September for my 40th birthday and I’m completely overwhelmed! We love to explore (by foot as much as possible) and eat and drink and look at beautiful scenery. We’re not as concerned with tours or museums. We’re thinking we want to do 1-2 weeks in Italy with 2-3 nights in Capri. I’d really appreciate some itinerary suggestions or or any tips for traveling to the area. There’s SO MUCH to see and I know we can’t do it all (we’d also love some relaxing beach time). Budget between $2-300 USD PER night with maybe one two night splurge during the trip if it’s worth it. Thanks in advance!
Do you have the plane tickets? If so which city in Italy are you arriving and departing from?
check RS guidebk he has some great lodging and it in suggestions. Beaches in general are small if avail. Stay in Sorrento a few days it is lovely and so Italian. The area of Amallfi coast is stunning include Ravello also. There is a great trail walk from Ravello to Amalfi town.
If you fly round-trip Naples, you could see the AC (3-4N) and Capri in a week. If you fly R/T Rome, you add travel time on the ground with more connections and you'll want to spend your last night in Rome to be near the airport.
The only really nice beach I saw on the AC was in Salerno, relatively large and sandy (most are pebbles).
We just returned from our Italy vacation: 3 nights Venice (1 night we arrived at 10pm so just went to bed), 2 nights in Florence, 4 nights Rome, 4 nights Amalfi Coast. We had great experiences in all of the Airbnbs. We stayed in Furore on the AC, residential community b/t Praiano and Amalfi town. I would stay on that side of the coast vs. Sorrento. We did day trip to Positano beach (plenty of options for renting chairs/umbrellas), an amazing boat tour of the coast w/lunch on Capri, then a 3rd day in Ravello. It was all very doable and easy enough catching the buses though we had a car we just left parked.
We stayed in Positano in a lovely B&B called Casa Nina in July (just last week). We took the high speed ferry to Capri we didn't stay but should have one night at least and then we took the high speed ferry to Amalfi one day and also went up to Ravello. In Positano we walked everywhere, the B&B was 15 min from the village area and although some are afraid to walk on the windy roads we were not. Check out Casa Nina, it was really nice and the beach club was right below. It was very reasonably priced.
Check out the Path of Gods and various other hikes. Not to be missed if you are active.
Keep in mind that this area is still very busy in September. Staying in Ravello would be the most laid back location. There are several stunning walks from here, the path of the lemons takes you to Minori, longer if you continue to Maiori. The walk to Atrani, and the walk to the paper mills from Amalfi are also beautiful.
There's good bus service from Ravello to Amalfi which would then give you access to the ferrys for the rest of the Coast.
If you're looking for beach time, Capri IMO is not the place. It's crowded, over priced and a tourist trap. Look at the "beaches on Capri" here.

If you're looking for a little more relaxed area look at the Island of Ischia. It's a larger island has several towns and villages, nice scenic walks, good and varied transportation and less expensive than Capri. Here are their beaches.
