Amalfi Coast in October?

Friends and I have been talking about a European birthday trip this year, but we cant go until mid October. One of the destination ideas is the Amalfi coast, and I wonder if going in October is too late to enjoy warm weather as I do want a bit of beach time.
I searched for weather information and have found conflicting reports - one said the average for Oct is in the 80's during the day, the other much cooler. Perhaps this trip should be done in August or September some other year.

Secondly, a friend suggests staying in Sorrento, but then each day would involve a bus trip, and I see the winding roads and wonder how much time that takes. Seems silly to take the bus back and forth. Is there a "best to place to stay" to visit the towns around Amalfi and Ravello? In addition to walking around and all the general sight seeing, I'm looking for a spot where we can sit at a cliff-side hotel or restaurant where we drink Italian wine and enjoy the view and I think the Amalfi Coast area sounds perfect for that!
Thanks for any suggestions.

First I would check hotel booking sites to see what's open in mid-October, some places begin shutting down for the winter. You are right to stay in Amalfi or Ravello if you want to be on the Amalfi Coast, although my favorite place is Praiano (between Positano and Amalfi).

Temps average in the 70's in October. Warmer earlier in the month. I was there in September (late) and the weather was great. We swam in the Med.

The coast is not easy to get around. Agree with your bus trip thought. We stayed in Positano and took the local bus to Amalfi and Ravello. Want luxury try Le Sirenuse in Positano, any hotel in Ravello.

I have always thought of Sorrento as "little America." That may be harsh but.... I like the other towns.

Unless you take ferries/jetboats, each day will involve a bus trip around the Amalfi so it really doesn't matter where you stay from that standpoint. We prefer Sorrento (Sorrentine and not Amalfi Coast) because of train (Pompei/Naples) SITA bus and jetboat all available from there. The boats can't dock in Positano when the weather isn't favorable, and train isn't an option other than Sorrento and Salerno. It's just nice to have more options around the region. From Ravello, the only option you'd have is bus, and Amalfi, bus and boat.

Yes, bus takes time, and is not my favorite method of transport in this region due to a weak stomach. Our last visit was in October, BTW.
