Amalfi Coast ideas

We will be taking a cruise in Late May/early June. We do stop in Naples for a day on the cruise and end in Rome. Our plan is to spend a couple days in Rome then we have 3 days before we head back to the US. I would love to go stay in the Amalfi Coast, but not sure how to approach this.

Should we rent a car and drive there?
Take a train?
Where do you recommend staying in that area?
What are must sees? And should we try to do part of it the day we stop in Naples?

Thanks!

Hopefully the above Search will yield some helpful info. Plan on the AC being very crowded and hot in June.
Three days is not enough for the AC/ Sorrento area, especially from Rome. It's a four hour drive Rome toSorrento. The infrastructure south of Naples has sadly been neglected, the roads are constantly congested, the public transportation somewhat chaotic and "gritty". A car would be your worst nightmare because of the traffic and lack of parking. The area is a victim of its instagram success.

You could take a train to Salerno, but again, if those three days include two travel days, it's too much work for one full day of exploring.
Take advantage of any available shore excursions when you dock in Naples. The convenience would be worth it.

This is the year of the Pope's Jubilee, so Rome will be extra crowded. Secure your lodging asap.
And- you need to be back in Rome the night before your flight home, due to the transportation difficulties.
Is there another area closer to Rome you might be interested instead? Does the cruise offer extensions post cruise? These options may be worth exploring .
Have a great trip.

I am not a cruise person, so pardon me if this is a dumb question, but can you 'jump ship' at Naples do your Amalfi coast visit and then make your way to Rome to spend your extra days there before heading home?

I am presuming the ship goes from Naples to Rome where the cruise ends and therefore you would not be missing anything of significance.

Just my random Sunday night thought.

Great idea, Joe! I would try to do that.

Otherwise, train to Naples and private driver to your hotel on Amalfi Coast.

I currently have 7days planned in Sorrento the first week in May. Thought I would do day trips to Positero, Amalfi, etc. Now I am wondering if I should do fewer days in Sorrento and move to Positero or Amalfi for a different perspective. Ideas?

Because a Frecciarossa train can deliver you to Naples in just over one hour, I don't see the need to negotiate with the cruise company. If you have never visited Rome before, I would get a nice hotel and enjoy Rome. It can be between risky and impossible to wake up in even, Sorrento, and fly out of Rome the same day. So you have a last night in Rome anyway.

Note that Sorrento is not technically "on the Amalfi Coast." Some people like purpose-built resort Sorrento for good daytrip options. The actual AC is quite expensive to travel around, when the busses and ferries are already jammed by tourism. For example, it would be crazy time-spent or crazy expensive to visit Pompeii from Positano.
