Amalfi coast, how physical fitness required?

We are a group of five, two families with a teenager. We will travel to Amalfi coast late July. Our base will be Sorrento. One of the families seldom do exercise at home. So the trip may be a hectic to them if it requires to climb a steep 1000 staircases for each of the spot. Is it true? How to save energy? How likely to skip climbing 1000 steps?

Sorrento's centre is spread out along a cliff top and is generally on the flat. There are town buses that will help in the spots that are down/up hill eg the two Marinas. There is also a public elevator down to Marina Piccola where you catch the ferries. Of the other towns Positano holds the most challenges as it is built up the hillside. If you go there by boat you should be able to at least visit the bottom of the town.

Did you read someplace about 1000 steps? Or is that just a hypothetical?

Not sure where you are thinking of going on the Amalfi Coast that might require hiking a thousand steps. There is the G-d's Pathway hike that could require that type of hiking if you were to start in Positano and walk up to Nocelle, but, you could start the hike on the other end and avoid those steps altogether by taking the bus down to Positano. Positano is pretty steep, but, even there you can catch the internal Positano bus if you feel that the steepness is daunting. Amalfi can be seen without hiking up so many steps. Ravello too.

The only challenges in Amalfi itself might be the long staircase to enter the cathedral (you can go very slowly or stop frequently, and the stairs are not that steep), and the inclining street up to the paper mill/museum, but there's a little bus for that.
