Amalfi Coast Honeymoon in the fall...

I've got the Rick Steves' Snapshot: Naples & Amalfi Coast & have been reading these boards for our October Honeymoon to the Amalfi.

I've done the 10-wk backpacking tour after college. I've read & used Rick Steves' guides on other trips. This trip, we'd like to be a little more laid-back... not go, go to see all the "sights". (Although we'll see some sights while there! Just at a much slower pace.)

This is somewhere we've BOTH never been & we like wandering around & finding little cafes to sit in & soak it allin... We aren't beach bunnies, so knowing that swimming & sunbathing is not likely does not bother us.

Thinking 8 nights with a home base in Sorrento. Should we do two separate home bases to change things up? Daytrips to Naples, Capri, Pompeii (add Herculaneum & Mt Vesuvius?), Amalfi & Ravello. Add a day out to Paestum?

Where to stay? Read about success with a hostel that is more like a hotel. Would that be appropriate for this stay? Others have raved about Il Nido. My only concern is that it's out of town & shuttles may run less frequently in the off season. Don't want to worry about getting back from a day trip for fear of missing the shuttle.

Also, we love wine & although the Campagnia region of Italy isn't as well known like Tuscany, etc., we'd love to do a winery day trip. I'm only finding very expensive private tours, though. Any recommendations here?

Thanks so much, in advance for your experience and insight!

Cheers~

I would get tired of staying in Sorrento the entire time. But I'm stumped as to where else to stay in the area that isn't obscenely expensive. (Positano, I'm looking at you!)

How about Rome for 3-4 nights, staying in Trastevere? Lots of cafes in Trastevere and there are many easy day trips from Rome and tons to see and do.

Hi, Carrie. I am originally from Burnsville and I'm going on my honeymoon in June. :)

We might be staying in Sorrento for a few days, and I have checked into a few different hotels. Il Nido def is the one that is standing out in my mind. The restaurant looks absolutely gorgeous! When I checked availability, they didn't have much left. Good luck!

Il Nido if you are staying in Sorrento - the view is spectacular and the shuttle should be no problem - it runs all day long up to llPM. I am sure if you contact them about rates etc. is to ask what there schedule is.We were there is 2006 and I wish we were going back this year but have opted for the CT instead. Food is great at their restaurant. As the other poster suggested may be 3 days there and perhaps Positano- La Tavalossa( ask for a room with a balcony - again a great view - being October maybe a little better rate at both places.
Enjoy and Congratulations

Hi Carrie,

We stayed at Punta Civita in Ravello in 2008. It was so beautiful and the views were amazing. The hosts were so helpful and helped us plan everything that we could have possibly wanted to do. It was reasonable (110 Euros) and breakfast was included. Every room has a view. There was also a couple from the UK there on their honeymoon and they really enjoyed themselves.

Congratulations!

An idea of your budget would be helpful and whether views are important. For example La Minervetta overlooking Marina Grande is a very popular honeymoon hotel, more like staying in a private house but it will be a bit of a splurge. The Antiche Mura and the modern Hotel Plaza, next door, do not have views but are very conveniently located in the town centre and not quite so expensive. You don't have to stay out of town to get views over the Bay of Naples, any of the cliff top hotels will deliver.

We have stayed both in and out of town but these days prefer in town. Being able to stroll around after dinner, and maybe do a little shopping, and then walk back to the hotel suits us.

8 days would be ideal for us (we are considering renting an apartment for a month this coming October). It means you can pace yourselves and spread out the trips rather than try to cram everything in. We like to "be" rather than "do" and the opportunity to just sit and read a book with the Bay of Naples spread out before me is just heaven.

We have only visited on day trips but how about a couple of days chilling on the island of Ischia.

Thanks, everyone! What a wealth of information I have here. Definitely considering breaking up the trip a bit now.

I think we budgeted about $100-$150 per night for hotel. I have to double check on that one. Considering staying in town, too.

Keep the ideas coming! Thank you.

We stayed last April '09 at the " Hostel more like a hotel" in Sorrento, and found it to be really nice. Unless you choose to stay in the Dorms, the rest of the hotel rooms are large and spacious. And for the 60E per night, can't be beat. It's so easy to day trip to Capri, Amalfi coast, Pompeii and all around the area. Sorrento is a great home base for the area. Here is the link to the Ulisse Hotel

Carrie -

Look at Massa Lubrense. It is a hidden gem just outside Sorrento (toward the tip of the pennisula)We stayed at the BellaVista.

I get the feeling that you are looking for laid back privacy... You will find it out on the Pennisula tip. 8 nights in this area would be wonderful. a day to Capri. A day to Paestum. A day to Positano and Amalfi by ferry. A day by land to Ravello. Include a do nothing, romantic day in between and time in Sorrento, with picnics out along the secluded cliffs on the tip of the Pennisula... wow - perfect honeymoon!!!!

Hi Carrie

We are heading to the Amalfi in 6 weeks and will be staying in Town. We are walkers and will be daytripping to all the locales so we thought something closer to train and docks would be useful. Used tripadvisor to locate and book Hotel Sorrento City. Check it out -it might work for you

Buon viaggio

The B & B Da Salvatore in Ravello has a view over the coast that matches some of Escher's prints, including the chess piece in "Metamorphose." Six rooms with individual baths, downstairs from a really good restaurant. Just on the other side of a tunnel is the central square, where the locals spend their evenings. You can explore the gardens and Roman ruins next door, or wander the shops in the exquisite small town.
