Amalfi coast hikes

I am interested in any first hand experience hiking from Maiori to Ravello. Is this direction mostly uphill? How difficult in general but also on the old knees.

I am thinking it might be nice to take this hike in the morning. Enjoy the views from Ravello have a meal and/or a refreshing drink. I am semi planning to take the bus from Ravello to Amalfi and then ferry on to Positano and then returning to Maiori by ferry. Does this appear doable for a pleasant day on the Amalfi coast?

Hi Carol,
I don't have any experience with the distance/landscape from Maiori to Ravello, but I will say this. I've been to Ravello twice (and am planning on staying there for 4 nights this July) and I would probably say to nix the hike to Ravello and take a bus. Then spend a few hours walking around one of the amazing gardens, either Villa Rufulo or Villa Cimbrone. They are amazing enough to revisit and so I am doing that in July, both of them!I They are absolutely breathtaking. I think if I had to choose, I would choose Villa Cimbrone's gardens. I was last there in 2011 and the gardens and views over the Mediterranean are exceptional. Then you could have lunch someplace overlooking the mediterranean. After that, get the bus down to Amalfi and spend several hours checking out the town before returning to Mairo. I think going to Positano in the same day would be too much. That's not to say it isn't worth it, I'm spending an entire week there before I head to Ravello for 4 nights. I just think it's too much for one day. I think Ravello/Amalfi would make an incredible day trip, why rush through them. But, I'm sure others will weight in. Have a wonderful time. When are you going?

I have done a lot of hiking on the Amalfi coast and although I haven’t done that particular route, I can tell you that yes it will be steep. The best way to approach hiking on the Amalfi coast is to take a bus to a town that’s higher up such as Ravello and walk down, although down is much harder on old knees than going up. You didn’t mention what month you are going, but be aware of how hot it gets in the summer.

We hiked down from Ravello to amalfi. It was very pleasant through small gardens and then through Atrani where there is a tunnel to Amalfi. So maybe you could take a bus to Ravello and then hike down to Amalfi, walk across town to get ferry to Positano.

We only had an afternoon in Ravello because we waited for rain to stop. There was a lot we didn’t see. The ferry ride to Positano is gorgeous. I liked the town less.

Yes my main interest in going to Positano is to see from the water and water front.

Walking down from Ravello will be tougher on your knees than anything about the Maiaori to Ravello walk--perhaps. For me, anyway walking down a steep path is so so much worse than achieving any kind of elevation, whether with steps or an incline. I don't recall the walk from Maiaori to Ravello being particularly difficult. In summer, it would be pretty brutal in the sun though.
You can get more details about the path using google, or get one of the two books that detail all of the hikes from Amazon (one published by Cicerone, the other by Sunflower).
The walks out of Amalfi were nice and not too difficult--more shade, too.

With such limited time, I would advise against taking time out to hike between towns at all. On top of the time involved, you could really wear yourself out. Ravello particularly is way high up from the water. I hiked down from above Positano and it was murder. You’ll be doing plenty of walking all these places with spectacular views without adding the extra steps. I say, relax and enjoy.

Yes I think I have decided that due to limited time I am going to use the ferry and bus to visit Ravello in the early morning and perhaps have lunch there and then get bus then ferry to Positano perhaps have a spritz on the waterfront and then ferry back to Maiori.
All the hikes sound like they could be a whole separate trip.
Thanks for all the helpful input really appreciated.
