Amalfi Coast from Rome - 1 night?

At the end of April, we are a group of four traveling via train from Rome to Pompei, then on to Maiori to spend the night.

The next day we will visit the Amalfi Coast via SITA bus toward Positano. We will take the 70 minute ferry back from Positano at 3:30 or 5:00 to Salerno where we catch a high speed train back to Rome at 7:25pm.

Just to see the beautiful scenery is our main desire, a little shopping, and a bite to eat.

My question, is this too much for one day and do you have suggestions on sights for this quick trip in Amalfi, Positano, and Salerno?

I think it is a lot to try to accomplish in a day. Is it possible to stay two night on the Amalfi Coast?

No, we have our train tickets and accommodations. What should we cut out to make it doable?

Well, nothing particularly crazy about a day-trip from Maiori to Positano, but how are you doing the Pompeii to Maiori leg? Ideally, I figure you’d go to Sorrento and then ferry around to Maori to get your coastal views in. That’s a long ride though. Personally, if I managed to pull that off, I’d reward myself with a relaxing day in Maiori. I mean, you are definitely packing in a lot. Even ending your first day in Sorrento, and then ferrying around to Salerno the next day (with a quick lunch stop) works a bit better.

That's a good idea but we already have accommodations, etc. we will have a private driver from a Pompei to Maiori.

Fran, well thought out plan. With a private driver between Pompeii and Maiori, you might be ready for a nice relaxing evening. Next day is reasonable too. Have fun!

Download a SITA seasonal schedule, as it may require two busses, and run only twice an hour. Consider ferry to Naples instead of longer run to Salerno, depending on whether you'd rather see Salerno or Naples. Maybe your intention is to maybe see your hotel from the ferry?

If you take an early train from Rome, you could well be in Maiori early enough for a late afternoon bus and/or ferry to Positano and back, sunset's not till 7.45 or so. Find time to stop in Minori for pastries and gelato at Sal de Riso - they also have "real" food, but the pastries are to die for.

How much luggage will you have with you? Maybe it's better to leave your stuff in Maiori for the day and pick it up when you're ready to go to Salerno. The bus stop in Salerno is next to the train station. The ferry stop is no more than 10 minutes' walk (level, not uphill) to the train.

It's a good plan, given your limited time. BTW you can take a taxi from Pompeii to the train station in the modern city center (about 1 km) and a fast train to Salerno. Chances are your driver will take you through Salerno to Maiori. I think you'll save more time by taking the fast train to Naples and then a private driver or taxi to Pompeii, rather than waiting for a local train in Naples.
