Amalfi coast for two weeks?

My husband and I are spending two weeks in the amalfi coast from September 21,2012 to October 5th. We are thinking 6 nights in Massa Lubrense and 6 nights in Positano. Should we stay in Capri for a couple of nights? Any suggestions? Do we have to have a car? Should we stay in Sorrento? Thank you, Carmella

Camella How are you getting to Massa Lubrense? And where are you flying home from? Rome? We did have a car and drove from Sorrento to Positano, but used the bus system to get to Amalfi and Ravello and then the ferry back to Positano. To drive from Massa Lubrense to Positano would hairaising to say the least. We drove from the north of Italy to the Amalfi area but our host in Positano advised us not to drive from their to Amalfi. We took the bus instead for the day and needless to say were glad of it. The roads are VERY winding and no guard rails. Coming from the south though you will be hugging the cliffs, so maybe not so bad. Buses may be your best bet. 6 nights in Positano might be a bit long. If you are driving from the south stop for the day in Amalfi. 3 days in Positano and take a trip for the day to Capri and then on to Sorrento for 3 days.

I agree that six days is too long in Positano - three days should be enough especially if you do Amalfi and Revello first. You can do a days boat trip from Positano or Sorrento to Capri or you could overnight there, taking a boat from Positano and then on the return trip go to Sorrento. Sorrento is a great base for seeing Pompeii, Herculaneum and my favourite, Paestum. You could rent a car for a couple of days in Sorrento - roads are easier to navigate but public transport should work for everything. Enjoy!

We were recently in that area and regretted not planning to spend a night on Capri. The problem with just a daytrip is that the last ferry back (in our case to Sorrento) departs pretty early, leaving you with a quite short visit. Sorrento is a good base for visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum.
