Amalfi Coast for New Years

Hi All,

My boyfriend and I have decided to spend 10 days in Italy to celebrate the New Year. We're flying into Rome, but since we just visited last year, we hope to spend the majority of our time seeing the coast and countryside.

I'm coming to you to ask for some advice: how should we spend our time in Italy?

A little bit about us:
* We're two 20-somethings who enjoy good food, beautiful scenery, and experiencing new cultures.

* We've been fortunate to travel a good bit in Europe, so are looking for some "off the beaten path" activites and expertiences that would give us a good feel for Italy as a place to live, not just visit.
* We're planning to rent a car (unless we get advised otherwise) and stay in bed & breakfast-type places.

Thank you so much for your help!
Laura

Lucky you. You will regret having a car in Rome and Amalfi coast area. Bus /train works great there, besides parking/driving is difficult even for small cars. ck RS recommendations on how to train it from Rome and onto amalfi coast then bus everywhere. It is easy and more fun sans car. Don't forget a daytrip ferry to Naples, Capri and bus to Sorrento , Positano, Amalfi, Ravello. I have done it and think it is one of the best for Italy.

I totally disagree about renting a car in the south. We just got back from 4 days in a vacation house near Sorrento. It was wonderful. I wish we could have stayed for a full week. We did our grocery shopping in a tiny shop near the house and just cooked dinnners and breakfasts for ourselves. we ate lunch out most days. I was prepared for the most crazy/scary driving experiance of my life. It was a piece of cake. We drove the Dingle Pensulia in Ireland this summer and that was a nightmare compared to Almafi area. This is where we found the rental house, if you're interested. My gem from our too short of trip was Rovello a little town above the city of Amalfi. It was quiet and had beautiful views.
