Amalfi Coast - fly in? car? train? bus?

My husband and I plan to go to the Amalfi Coast. We plan to stay in Sorrento and go to Capris for a day and Pompeii. We plan to stay in Positano for two nights. We would like to visit Amalfi by boat while we are there.

It seems like there are advantages to fly into either Naples or Rome? Can you please help us figure out which will be best for us?

What is the best way to get to Sorrento or Positano? Bus, Car rental? ?

We appreciate all suggestions. Thank you

First Look at the costs of flying into both Rome and Naples. You may see some advantages there. Naples is closer to Sorrento. there are direct flights to Rome from the USA but not to Naples. You would have to connect.
The best way to get to Sorrento is to take the Campania Express from Naples.
You could take taxi from Sorrento to Positano as the best way with your baggage.

Whether it is best to fly into Rome (FCO) or Naples (NAP) depends on where you fly from (which you don’t say), price at the time of travel, etc.
FCO has more flights and therefore generally more competitive prices. Also NAP has no non stop flights to North America, unlike FCO.
Nevertheless using you a search engine like Kayak see your options for your dates of travel.
The easiest way to reach Sorrento from Rome is by train (via Naples).
From NAP airport you also have a bus option directly to Sorrento with the CurreriViaggi company. A private car transfer from Naples to Sorrento costs about 90€

Which city to fly into would depend on which is easier from your home airport.

As for getting from the airport to Sorrento, or Positano, "the best way" is different for different people. Is "best" the cheapest way? The fastest way? The easiest way ( which usually translates to most expensive).

Rome2rio.com is a good site to see what transportation options are available. But go to the individual websites for up to date schedules and fares. One thing I would NOT do is rent a car - especially if you're going to be there in high season.

Is it possible by train or plane to include Milan Florence, the Amalfi Coast and Sicily in a ten day trip

Is this stop a part of your original plan noted above?

Depending on time of year, boat service may/may not be a reliable option.

For air arrival Naples is obviously closer than Rome to AC region.

Sorrento has bus and rail service from Sorrento. No rail service to Positano.

Can you please help us figure out which will be best for us?

Where are you coming from; where are you going afterwards; how much time total is this trip?

Thanks for your suggestions and feedback....we live in upstate NY and plan to fly out of Toronto.

We can fly into either Rome or Naples and I welcome your input. We can fly directly into Rome and it would be less expensive....we would need to learn the pros and cons.

We plan to stay for one week. I picture 4 nights in Sorrento and 2 nights in Positano. It's our 15th anniversary.

We plan to travel in the middle of April.

At the risk of stating the incredibly obvious, even though airfare from YYZ-FCO may be less than YYZ-NAP, when comparing your costs do not over look the cost of transport, both time and money, of getting between Rome and Naples.

For your trip I would do Positano 1st and finish in Sorrento, so you have easier access to your departure airport, whichever you choose.

You can use the 'search' bar at the top of the page to look for numerous discussions on " How to get from Naples to Sorrento (or Positano)"
