I was told the Amalfi coast will be completely shut down the first week of April 2012, it is not the season. That's the only time I can be there, does anyone know if we can still see the sights, stay at a hotel and are restaurants open or any tourist drivers? Thank you.
How did you hear that, tonya? I'm just basing on my experience. I was in Naples, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, Salerno and south to Paestum in the middle of April a few years ago and it was going strong. I thought it was the perfect time to be there. Weather was excellent, not hot, not cold. Fresh squeezed (by me) fresh blood oranges. Yum. I can't imagine that a week earlier would make a difference. What say others?
The season starts at Easter which next year is the end of the first week in April. Sorrento, being bigger, will have more hotels etc open than the smaller places but there will be places to stay and eat in the other centres, just not so many. There is a recent push for the area to become more of a year round destination but it is still early days. National sites eg Pompeii will be open, public transport will be on winter schedules and ferry services between Sorrento, Capri and Naples run, weather permitting, all year round. The other ferry services will not/are unlikely to be running that early. PS - a good reason to stay in Sorrento at Easter is to see the traditional Easter Thursday and Good Friday processions.
Keep checking. Many locals schedule family travel holdidays for Easter week. Particularly if you are thinking of some of the larger places, I think you will find them open and active. Contacting one or two hotels will give you more specific info.
In mid-March we spent three days in Sorrento and took the bus trip down the Amalfi Coast, and we also spent three days in Naples. We visited Pompeii and Herculaneum as well. Not sure what sights you want to see but as far as we could tell there were lots of tourists and most of the hotels and restaurants seemed to be open. You should be able to have a great time!
tonya, I've been in that area in late April and while it was somewhat "quiet" it definitely wasn't "shut down". I suspect that some things will be closed over Easter, which will be from Apr. 6 - 9 in 2012. However, I'm sure there will be some Hotels and restaurants open. It would help to have a bit of further information on which places you plan to visit in that area, your travel dates and what type of sightseeing you're planning? Also, what type of "tourist drivers" are you planning to use? Cheers!
We were going to stay in Sorrento and either rent a car or a private driver to see pompai, herculium, capri and the coast. We are flying home from Naples and will make that our last day 4/7/11. I heard it's a bit dirty and sketchy, since this is a first time girls trip (4qty) to the country we are trying to be a bit safe. Thank you all
