I may have to choose between a day on Capri or a drive from Sorrento to Positano along the coast (in early October). (I assume I can't do both in one day). Which would be the better choice? ALso, is the bus a good way to do the coast drive and then ferry to return?

My vote is for Amalfi Coast, love it. Been to Capri many times, don't like it and the ferry is expensive. I would take the bus to Positano and the ferry back. The Hop-On Hop-Off bus in Sorrento is also very good. We've done it 3 x and really enjoy it.

An unusual thing happened when I was in Sorrento last summer: the ferries to Capri weren't allowed to land for a few days because of a strike protesting the high fares/fees. Could ruin a trip if you only have a day.

The drive from Sorrento to Positano is only 10 miles and takes probably 45 minutes at most. You could easily do that plus a day trip to Capri - if you wanted to.

Dave - My wife and I would vote for Capri and I am afraid we disagree that you can do both it one day. We were there two weeks ago and did both on two separate days. One day to Amalfi and one day to Capri. Granted we were there at the peak of the travel season, but the public bus from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi was way to crowded. We took a taxi from Sorrento to Amalfi (140 euro). But thought that just going to Positano would have been fine. (~75 euro). We took the ferry from Amalfi back to Sorrento. Highly recommended over the bus. You get to see the coast from another angle. But we loved Capri and one of the reasons was that we rented a boat in the afternoon (2 hours for 90 euro) and loved it. We drove around the island and swam at the green ghetto and a few nice little coves. I don't know if the weather in October would allow this, so you might want to check that out. Plus the shops and alleys were better than in Amalfi (we did not explore Positano) Long story short - We recommend Capri. Dirk and Sue

If the choice were simply Capri or a drive to Positano, I would pick Capri. However if you have an entire day there is no reason why you can't see more than Positano. If you told me the choice was to see Capri or several towns on the coast that included Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, than I would pick the coastal towns over Capri. That being said if you don't have the paitence to wait for buses go to Capri. We drove the coast in a rented car and loved it and got to see more in one day than we would have if we had to wait for buses. It is intimidating driving the first day but you get use to it. Parking is a big issue but we always seem to have found a spot.

The drive from Sorrento to Positano is fabulous. If you drive it in 45 minutes, you may be going too fasttake your time and pull over often and enjoy the views. You can easily make a day of it by having a meal high in Positano overlooking the sea, then drive on to Amalfi and up to Ravello for another meal, drinks, or gelato. The views are spectacular and unforgettable. Shopping is also super in Positano shoes, ceramics, clothes, gifts....we spent 4 days there and would go back tomorrow if possible.
