I'm curious to know if anyone out there has done a tour of the Amalfi Coast, by bus. We're looking to do it in like half a day...is that possible? How long does it typically take? Is it necessary to go all the way to Salerno?
Thanks!

You can ride the public bus from Sorrento via coastal route by Positano, Amalfi and Ravello then return via same route prob in a half day. You would not be able to get off and walk around in that time however. Ck schedules carefully if that is what you decide. You could also take the boat ferry from Sorrento to Postiano and see alot from a different perspective. half day is better than nothing and certainly worth it even if you will return some day. It is one of my top 10 best.
Just a warning to those of you with a weaker stomach...I thought the experience was going to be one of my "top 10" but unfortunately I am prone to car-sickness and had to have the bus stop so I could get off and run to the nearest garbage can. Be forewarned! The bus drivers are crazy there, which doesn't make the sharp turns any easier. The scary part is that even after taking a gravol an hour before getting on that damn bus, I still ended up getting sick...believe me, I wasn't the only one. The worst part was I was not able to go further than Positano because I knew I would probably get sick again. We even had to take the boat back to Sorrento to avoid the unpleasant bus ride.
Take the bust to Amalfi and the boat back! Beautiful!
We did the trip last month. My wife is subject to sea sickness, but had absolutely not problem. Sit in the first row. We went as far as Amalfi and returned by bus. We left on the 8:30 am bus and returned on the 3:30 pm bus. Stopping midway in Positano can be a problem if you plan on continuing to Amalfi or vice versa. On the way back, the bus was already standing room only when we got to Positano and no one else could get on to return to Sorrento. If you want to photograph glare free, get a seat with the top sliding window and stick out you camera through it.
Will the boats be cruising in October?
The ferry is the way to see the Amalfi coast. I too took the bus on everyones advice of it being "a don't miss experience", but it was actually boring. All you see are the sides of cliffs if you are lucky enough to get a window seat on the right side of the bus. Went to Positano on the bus, then took the ferry back to Sorrento, and have taken the ferry on all my other trips to the area. The ferry ride was relaxing and the views were spectacular.
