We will be based in Sorrento and want to do a day trip on our own to the Amalfi Coast using a combination of bus and boat to get the views from both sides. I was thinking about taking the bus as far as Amalfi. Then we would explore Amalfi...any tips on what to see would be appreciated. Then catch a bus or boat to Positano. Explore Positano...again any tips would be appreciated. Then take the boat back to Sorrento. Does this combination of bus/boat work? Has anyone done it this way?

Bus & boat work fine. When you go to Amalfi, by all means take the local bus uphill to Ravello. Ravello might be the most beautiful spot on the entire peninsula. You'll see the buses as soon as you disembark at Amalfi town.
You'll probably also want to do a day trip to Capri - easily done by boat (of course) from Sorrento.

Def. bus to farthest lovely Ravello,walk back or bus to Amalfi, bus back to Positano walk down gorgeous ped paths to Positano beach to catch ferry back to Sorrento. (Walking up from P. Beach is very steep)
