if me + my husbans have a limited time to travel the amalfi coast...should we travel till positano or do we really gain alot by going further to amalfi or salerno?

If you can visit both Positano and Amalfi, you've seen everything you need. No need to travel all the way to Salerno.
If you have time only for one, Positano is the quaintest town. But Amalfi is also nice and they have a beautiful cathedral.

If you get to Amalfi and have time go up to Revello and look out over the coast line.
