Amalfi Coast by ferry

Our ship will be in Sorrento in early June. We were on a similar itinerary two years ago and drove the coast and went to Pompeii with a private driver. This time we thought about having him drive us down to Amalfi and then take the ferry back to see the view from the water (weather permitting). I've checked the schedules and am now interested in hearing from anyone who has done this -- Amalfi to Positano to Sorrento by ferry. Good idea? Thanks for your input.

Love it. The towns clinging to the cliffs, the water a magnificent shade of blue and the excitement of arriving.

do it! It's gorgeous.

Just be sure that you verify which dock in Amalfi your ferry will come in. We were told one dock - but when the ferry came it went to the other one. We had to run.

Amalfi to Positano is spectacular- by all means do not miss doing this. You can even take the local bus from Sorrento thru Positano to Amalfi. Take a local bus up to Ravello. The drive is not to be missed. An then take the ferry back.

We planned to take the SITA bus from Sorrento to Amalfi. We got just outside Postiano and all traffic stopped for an accident farther up the road. We waited on the bus for a while and decided to see Postiano instead. After a few hours exploring Postiano, we took a ferry to Amalfi for lunch and then returned from Amalfi to Sorrento by ferry. It was a great day.

By all means, ride the ferry. It beats choking on bus fumes and getting held up in traffic. The views along the way are really great!

We are staying in Positano and we are driving there from Tuscany. I've checked the road on google maps and they look good and I know they are very windy. Has anyone driven themselves along this coast? Most have recommended we don't drive but if you take it slow how hard can it be?

Jean - for us it is not so much the windy roads but the amount of traffic, especially at weekends, and the problems with finding decent parking spots. If progress is slow on the bus I can always read or doze the time away, let someone else take the strain!

We used to drive in the area 20 to 30 years ago when it was not so bad but no longer.

Hi Linda, we do have a parking space guaranteed by our hotel and really plan to park it for the duration in Positano. And yes we are driving down on a Saturday because that's when we have to leave our villa so we'll be there until the following Tuesday. But if traffic is the problem and not the roads, my hubby says that's not a problem. We have driven in Italy before and and driven in all the major U.S. cities so we'll really don't think it will be a problem but we really don't have a choice. Also, there are 4 adults with 2 that cannot climb well so taking the train to Sorrento & a taxi from there with all our luggage really isn't an option. So we'll take a chance but thanks for your input.

We drove the Amalfi coast road (from Massa Lubrense to Paestum). We were there the end of July - we did the drive on a Tuesday. The road itself was not bad at all. Slow and windy yes, but who wants to hurry through that scenery? We had NO traffic at all. (a lucky fluke!) It was glorious! We drove through all the towns that day as our destination was Paestum. We went back by ferry another day and visited Positano and Amalfi.
