Amalfi Coast bus ride and Capri

My husband and I are going to Europe in September for our honeymoon. We will arrive in Sorrento at 4pm, stay the next two nights, and leave the following morning for Rome. So we have one full day. I would like to take the bus ride of the Amalfi Coast in the morning, then head to Capri in the afternoon for a boat tour. Should we take the bus only to Positano, then the ferry directly to Capri? Or will we have time to take the bus all the way to Amalfi? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

We just returned from Italy and our 2nd visit to Sorrento. If you want to fit both the Amalfi Coast and Capri into one day I would suggest you take the earliest bus and get off in either Positano or Amalfi. Spend some time exploring there and then ferry to Capri, and back to Sorrento at the end of the day. Or you could reverse it and ferry first to Capri, then to Amalfi or Positano, and either bus or ferry back to Sorrento. You may want to see what the weather and water conditions (rough or windy, etc.) will be in the morning to make your decision about which way to do it.
Sorrento itself has much to offer. Have fun wandering the streets in the evening, watch the sunset from the cliffside park or the Foreigner's Club, and wander down Via Marina Grande to Marina Grande itself for an excellent waterfront dinner at Tratoria da Emilia's or Ristorante Delfino.

How long does the bus ride take from Sorrento to Positano and Sorrento to Amalfi? And how long for the ferry from Positano to Capri and Amalfi to Capri? Our boat tour is at 3:00 pm in Capri. What time is the last ferry from Capri to Sorrento? Thank you Lise for the suggestions of what to do in Sorrento during our evenings there!

I think that trying to see Capri and tour the entire Amalfi coastline in a day is a bit ambitious. I tried it in 2 days and couldn't do it, and I had my own car. First of all, if you were to take a bus, you are at the mercy of the transit system. You would have to stop in all the towns along the way, not to mention the fact that the road is extremely narrow and the buses get hung up trying to pass oncoming traffic with an inch or two (literally) to spare. I know, I drove this road and this happened to me. It doesn't look far on a map, but the road twists and winds through every little town. It will take you far longer than you think it will, trust me on this. You won't have time to stop and really see Positano and Amalfi. If you want to go to Positano and Amalfi from Sorrento by road, you may want to invest in a driver for half the day. Even still, you won't have time to linger in either place. The ferry leaves from Amalfi in the morning and stops in Positano before heading for Capri. I took the ferry on a Monday morning from Amalfi and it took probably close to an hour and a half to get to Capri from Amalfi. There was only ONE ferry going to Capri from Amalfi in the morning and ONE that came back in the evening. You need to check into ferry schedules, because that may be your overriding factor. For the sake of time, I would see Sorrento after you arrive there and then go to Capri the next day, take your boat tour, and then return by way of Positano, have a look around, and then hire a car to take you back to Sorrento, or if the buses are still running you can go that route since you will not be in a hurry at that time. Hope this helps.

I would spend the day doing the Amalfi coast by bus--going to Positano and then on to Amalfi. You will need to leave early to enjoy both towns. Then I would take the boat back to Sorrento. While Capri is nice unless you are going to do the Grotto it is mostly shops. I found the Amalfi coast drive the more enjoyable of the two.

Laura, After re-reading your question and thinking about it, if you only have one day in Sorrento to spend touring around, I would take the advice of others posted here. My previous response answered the question of "how" to do both the Amalfi Coast and Capri in one day. However, this really would not be very enjoyable. You would be rushed, constantly checking to make sure of your transportation connections, and riding transportation rather that savoring the beauty of the place. Italy is all about slowing down and savoring life. You will be on your honeymoon and should be doing exactly that.

Having said that, the Amalfi Coast is a wonderful daytrip from Sorrento. You can choose bus, ferry, a combination of these, or private driver. We prefer the flexibility and commentary of a private driver booked ahead of time (not a taxi, they will rip you off!). We have always split the cost between 4 people and it really isn't that expensive for a full day. Search a few other recent posts on this site and you will see that I posted the info for the driver we used. Or send me a private message. I don't know where else you will be for your trip but for a honeymoon you may want to consider adding another day or 2 to this area. It is truely heaven on earth.
