Amalfi Coast Base- Naples 3 nights vs Naples 2 nights and Salerno 1 night?

Looking for some feedback about choosing a base for the Amafi Coast

Is it better to stay in Naples for 3 nights and use that as a base to go to Capri and Amalfi town/Ravello. Or, stay in Naples 2 nights and stay in Salerno 1 night.

I'll be flying into Rome airport around lunchtime, and then taking the train to Naples.

So, after arriving in Naples that first day, I don't have much planned- just recover from jet lag, walk Spaccanapoli, and get some Neopolitan pizza. That'll be my first night in Naples.

The second day, go to Capri as a daytrip from Naples. Sorrento would be closer to Capri, but an hour ferry from Naples to Capri doesn't seem that bad. And, after looking at hotel prices for Florence and Venice, I'm trying to save some money by choosing cheaper Naples hotels than the Sorrento hotels. That'll be the second night in Naples.

But, for the third day, I want to see Capri town and Ravello and take the ferry to see the Amalfi Coast. I could also do that from Naples, but Salerno has more ferries to Amalfi compared to Naples.

So, does it make sense to change hotels for 1 night and stay overnight in Salerno for that? Or, just stay in Naples to avoid the hassle of moving hotels?

And, after those 3 nights, I'll be going to Florence so both Naples and Salerno have both high speed, direct connections to Florence.

Thanks

Stay in Naples all three nights. From what I can see you can take a direct bus from Naples to Amalfi (2h), a direct bus from Amalfi to Ravello (30m) and a direct bus from Ravello to Naples (1h 45m). Do get an early start.

So it looks like your goals are to see Capri, Amalfi town, Ravello and the Amalfi Coast from the sea.

This is what I would do:
- Once you get to Naples, take the ferry to Capri. Spend 1 or 2 nights in Capri and
- then go to Amalfi town and spend 1 or 2 nights in Amalfi town
- From Amalfi you can then take the bus to Salerno to take train to Florence

This would likely triple your actual time in Capri, Amalfi and Ravello, especially with morning and late afternoon / evening time that are more enjoyable because the day trippers are gone and it’s much less crowded.

In Capri, I would look for hotels in Anacapri because they are more affordable.

This plan probably means a little more $$$ for hotels but it multiplies the time in your priority spots.

Third option: 1st night in Naples. Take the earliest ferry to Capri, check any bags at the dock. Spend the day on Capri, and take a late afternoon ferry to Amalfi. Stay in Amalfi (or Atrani) two nights, plenty of time to hang out and see Ravello. Take the early ferry to Salerno and pick up the train.

I basically did this, but from Sorrento and the Salerno train went to Rome. It’s doable but check the schedules obviously. Capri, Amalfi and particularly Ravello seem to be your sightseeing priorities, and this maxes your time there. The train station in Salerno is a short walk from the ferry dock.

You have a good plan, however, you didn’t mention what time of the year you are going. That matters.
