We are going to be spending the weekend in the Pompeii - Sorrento area (2/15 - 2/17). Should we stay in Sorrento or Positano? Any other suggestions for that time of year?

My vote is Sorrento becuz of what the other poster said and more affordable options also. Sorrento is very beautiful and central ,you will be pleased.

I recommend Sorrento. Its a larger town and more of a transit center than Positano. From Sorrento you can easily take the train to Pompeii, catch a bus/ferry/tour headed down to the Amalfi coast, or a ferry to Capri.

I prefer Positano. I like that it is alot smaller than Sorrento, but to each his/her own.

I imagine Positano will be mostly shut down; dark, cold and slippery. Depending on the weather, the ocean would be beautiful but the town, not so much.
From Sorrento you can visit Pompeii very easily.

I reccomend PSorrento as it is a more structured HUb specially if you go to Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Remember Positano is not served by trains and you must take the bus (SITA Bus) to Sorrento anyhow.
Easier to take the bus to visit Positano. I highly reccomend you to visit Amalfi and the gem...Ravello !
Remember that here in Sorrento on Feb 14th is the praton saint feast day, so you might find some events around !
The weather is still chilly, so bring some warm clothes and an umbrella !!!!
