Amalfi Coast and Tuscany/Umbria

I hope you can help. We have 2 weeks and plan to fly to Rome and take a train to Sorrento with a stop in Pompei. We also like to see Herculium and Naples museam and possibly hike to Mt. Vesuvius. Then plan to move to Positano. From Positano we want to walk Path of Gods, next day a trip to to Capri and after a boat trip of Amalfi coast with a visit to either Ravello or Amalfi towns.
Then we will take train to Florence (2nd time). Want to spend some time there, see other towns. We also would like to spend a couple of days in Thermal spa town and eventually get back to Rome. We are giving up a car in Orvietto. So our plans between Florence and Orvietto are not defined. Could get help on how many days to spend in Sorrento and Positano. Also any suggestions for a spa and a base between Florence and Orvietto.
Day 1 Fly to Rome - train to Naples, visit Pompeii (luggage in storage) train to Sorrento - sleep Sorrento
Day 2 Train to Herculium then train to Naples museum - sleep in Sorrento
Day 3 Ferry or Bus to Positano - Path of the Gods - sleep Positano
Day 4 Capri - sleep Positano
Day 5 Amalfi Coast (either boat or bus) to Ravello and Amalfi - sleep Positano
Day 6 Train to Florence sleep Florence
Day 7 Florence - sleep Florence
Day 8 Florence to Siena - sleep Siena (rent a car)
Day 9 Spa Town
Day 10 Spa Town
Day 11 ?
Day 12 Orvieto
Day 13 to Rome
Day 14 fly home

Thank you in advance, Polina

hey pknaster
when is this trip? day 1 fly to rome from where, what time, did you give time for customs, jetlag, train schedule, waiting time, delays, is pompei open. this is like others say "amazing race", you are asking for toooooo much on your first day. you may be asleep on train to naples and miss pompei. a guidebook will help you better.

Add your day 11 at the beginning of the trip. It is too much to get off the plane jet lagged and stop in a site like Pompeii before making your spray to Sorrento. Add that night in Sorrento and day trip back to Pompeii. Consider seeing the Naples museum on your way to Florence, if you can get a ice early start that day.

Assuming you are arriving Rome from North America, your plan to see Pompeii en route Sorrento on Day 1, can fairly be classified as sheer lunacy ( sorry, no way to sugar coat it)

As already suggested, use "Day 11" between Day 1 and 2

Another vote for Laurel's plan! Trying to cover Pompeii right off an international flight would leave you crosseyed and exhausted. It is a VAST, complex excavation that demands wide-open eyes and 100% attention, and can easily consumer the better part of a day, or did for us, anyway. I've been there twice and still haven't ventured into every corner.

Thank you all for your advice. I was not sure about visiting Pompeii on the first day and I know I know for sure - NOT to do it. Does any one has an opinion about seeing Herculaneum after Pompeii, is it worth It? Is Pompeii and Museum in Naples with Pompeii artifacts doable in 1 day?
Still looking for thermal spa between Siena and Orvieto. I know there are several but would lie a recommendation who actually been there
Thank you,
PK

Thanks for the Oct 2 date. Are you arriving early morning, or later in the day? I ask because Pompeii requires daylight, which gets shorter in the fall, as well as good weather. Heat should not be too bad in October. Since Herculaneum is smaller and less demanding than Pompeii, it would be more sensible on arrival day. But hauling your luggage 15 minutes downhill (and then uphill) from the Herculaneum rail station would be a drag. I'll make the observation that the whole point of Sorrento is access to transport. It's not as magical a town as Positano. Do you have hotel reservations? These towns book up. You may want the multi-day, five site ancient excavation ticket, bought at Pompeii or Herculaneum.

Check FALL ferry schedules. Sorrento has more ferries than Positano. You may wish to change to a daytrip in Positano and remain in the same room in Sorrento. I mean because it facilitates daytrips, not because Positano isn't nice. But I don't think waking up once in Positano is a necessity of life. (Opinion.)

You have probably missed the discount window for the two longer train trips. But then you'd be tied to a specific train. Check the Trenitalia site carefully for many different options (travel time ... ) to Florence, and well as fast and slow options to Naples.

I'm not that big on Spa towns, so I wonder if it's wise to limit your choices to them. Price, comfort, parking, dining options are also important. And you'd like to have a good location for the daytrips you want to use the car for. Other than Spa and starting from Siena, you don't give any basis for recommending a town in Tuscany. Would you also consider a town with a lake? (Have to check October temperatures online!)

Have you looked at Villa Campomaggio in Radda in Chianti? They have a spa and beautiful location.

Forgot to mention arriving to Rome on Oct 2 and taking train to Naples

So you depart the US on Oct 1 ( "Day 0") on an overnight flight and arrive Rome on Oct 2, ( Day 1) ?
