Many threads on this, so do a search for more detail.

If I were doing it--and this is time-of-year & weather-dependent--it would be train Roma Termini to Salerno (2 hrs, 12 min), then ferry to Amalfi, Positano or Capri. Also, you can take a SITA bus from Salerno to Vietri Sul Mare and then Amalfi. Forget the bus from May through September, too busy.

Or hire a driver from Salerno, as we're doing. Usually for 4 people you'll pay upwards of 100 Euro/hr. Yes, pricey.

Day trip to amalfi coast is it possible from Rome? And how to get there?

No not possible; it is too far from Rome.

Yes, it is possible, but pricey as I said upthread. Relying on public transportation (other than Trenitalia) to do this in one day would be much cheaper but could go off the rails at any number of points in the process.

Re-thinking, I'd hire a driver in Naples--shorter train ride from Rome--do whatever on the A.C., then drop you off back at the Napoli Centrale station for the train ride back to Rome.

Yes this topic comes up a lot. It's very time consuming and somewhat expensive to visit this beautiful places, and you just have a short time there to say you were there then you return to the ugly big city places. Why? Spend a few days in the Amalfi coast - see it at sunrise and sunset, have dinner. It might be the highlight of your vacation - more than looking at some crumbling ruins.

It's like being based in San Francisco and wanting to do a day trip to Big Sur.
