Amalfi Coast and more

Hi,

I am planning on going to the Amalfi Coast next summer. I am looking for breathtaking views and beautiful beaches.

  1. in which town would you recommend that we stay?
  2. Where else in Italy would you recommend that we go (more scenic places)?
  3. Any recommendations for foodies? Before or after going to the Amalfi Coast, we would like to go somewhere in Italy (not too far from the Amalfi Coast) to experience authentic Italian food/wine and culture. Thanks!

Ricks 25 minute video should give you some ideas

Also I recommend you get a guidebook on Italy to organize your trip. The answers to all the questions you ask can be found there in the table of contents and index. It is easier to stay organized this way and discover other things you might be interested in. They come made available in print or where you can read it on a mobile device. If you can't buy one please try your local public library.

  1. depends. Some say Positano has the best views, which is why it's usually the most expensive.
  2. Salerno, Sorrento and Naples.

Edit: I typed "3." as the beginning of my second line - meaning an answer to your question #3. Somehow the website "corrects" this to "2."

Chani said 'Salerno, Sorrento & Naples'. None on the actual Amalfi Coast itself.

And I'm surmising the reason for this is that the OP is traveling in the summer, when the A.C. will be choked with tourists and traffic. She's right, although I don't know how summer heat in Italy will translate to Naples. A great place, but you might experience some smells you didn't know existed!

There is one little place that I didn't know existed until we passed it on the way from Sorrento to Napoli Capodichino airport in March. That was Vico Equense, about 20 km towards Naples from Sorrento. Small, not much to the town, looked beautiful, wonderful vistas. Still not technically on the A.C, but buses and the Circumvesuviana train have stops there. Might be worth a look.

Your questions 2 and 3 are too broad to really answer without knowing how much time you have, how far you are willing to travel, interests, etc... Kind of like asking where to go in the United States for scenery when there are so many options.
So much of Italy is touristy and most like it that way, good food and wine can be found most anywhere ; you may be a rare type that wants truly authentic away from the tourists. Since it has been so tourist discovered not sure the most scenic places are unknown still. Further south probably, north of Amalfi Coast unlikely.

Most folks (myself included) when visiting the Amalfi Coast do a combined trip of the Amalfi Coast and Rome with some points in between the 2 but rarely not much than that.
That is a good plan for between 8-14 nights. If you have more than 2 weeks you can do more.

As for question 1: Positano is the town I would recommend. Have never been in the summer months though and it may be too overrun with crowds at that time for me. It is small and usually the most expensive town as well, assuming you stay in the village area. I feel the views are the best and not sure there is much debate over that in my eyes but others definitely prefer other towns for reasons than views and if going in the summer I might as well.

The whole Amalfi coastline is beautiful - rugged hills and cliffs meeting the water. But beaches are small and it's not mostly about beaches. Views are good from towns and buses along the coastal road, but even better from a boat, which I recommend taking in at least one direction during your sightseeing.

I believe Positano has the most "breathtaking" views on the Amalfi coast. Recommend Alcione Residence.
I believe three nights there is sufficient. There are several restaurants in Positano many
of which "foodies" would enjoy. Recommend Mela, La Taverna Leone.
Bon Voyage.
