We would like to visit Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. Staying in Rome for 2 1/2 weeks. Should we take a day trip or stay? If we stay, where?
If you have 2 & 1/2 weeks, stay at least a couple of nights for certain. Use Sorrento as a base. It is centrally located to the places that you will most likely want to visit, and you will have the best transportation options there.
This would be tough as a day trip. Pompeii involves a lot of walking, and there's not a lot of protection from the sun. Every time I go there, I'm dead tired afterward. Sorrento would be a great place to decompress after Pompeii. You should also take a full day to explore and appreciate the Amalfi Coast. Yes, you can take a bus trip the length of the coast in a couple hours, but you really have to get out and have a look around to get a sense of the place.
2.5 weeks is a long time in Rome, especially if you're just there to go sightseeing. Take a few days and enjoy the beauty of the coast.

there is no way you can do much more than wave at these places in a day trip from Rome. Go to Sorrento and stay for a few days, using that as a base.
Doing Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi is too much for a day trip. Pompeii is immense and takes 3 -4 hours at a minimum. The Amalfi is worth a few days because it is so beautiful and diverse.
As for Naples...my parents were Calabrese and never had anything good to say about the place.
Buon viaggio,

2 and a half weeks is way too much time for Rome and I love Rome. Sorento makes a great home base to see the Amalfi Coast. After that you would still have plenty of time to see Venice or Tuscanny. You have the time, make the most of your trip and see the rest of this wonderful country.
No question here-Stay a while you will not be disappointed it is fabulous. We stayed 5 nights and wished we could have stayed longer.
