Amalfi Coast

We are staying in Amalfi town . have booked transportation to Positano, Ravello, Priano from amalfi. however it looks like we are just being driven to these places and dropped off on our own. Do I book a local tour guide to show us and tell us about the area we are visiting? we are staying later on in sorrento so dont need a tour from sorrento to amalfi. Thoughts? Thank you

We were on a tour there (with Overseas Adventure Travel) in 2024. We stayed in Amalfi and visited Ravello and Positano (which wasn't included in the tour, but the trip leader helped a group of us get ferry tickets to visit it in our free time.) I don't recall having even an orientation walk in any of those places. They are quite compact, and mostly go UP. A good guidebook should tell you most of what you need to know. (RS has "Naples & the Amalfi Coast," haven't looked at it, but RS guides tend to be good.)

In Amalfi, the Duomo (basilica) and Paper Mill Museum are probably the main attractions, aside from hiking up above the town. I can recommend Antica Trattoria Barracca for a great meal; we liked it so much we went twice.

In Ravello, we went to the Villa Rufalo, which has nice gardens if you're there the right time of year, and gorgeous views anytime. (Ravello is up above the coast, so you don't have to hike to get the views like you do in Amalfi and Positano.) The Villa Cimbrone gardens in Ravello are also supposed to be quite beautiful; we didn't go there.

Positano wasn't that exciting to us; just more of the same scenery (and crowds) we saw in Amalfi. There may be attractions there to visit but we just wandered around.
