Amalfi Coast

I need help determining a good base to stay on the Amalfi Coast in mid October. We will not have a car so will rely on public transit. We are staying 4 nights in Sorrento, 3 nights in Capri, and have 4 more nights to stay either in Amalfi, Ravello, or Praino. We want to have access to good hiking and want to hike the "path of the Gods." I do have Julie Tippet's guide book to Sorrento-Amalfi-Capri and it seems that Amalfi is a central location, but Ravello sounds wonderful if we can manage transportation to and from.

From Amalfi it is very easy to reach Ravello. Just go to the central Tabacco Shop on the main square and buy a bus ticket up to Ravello. Ravello is beautiful - don't miss Villa Cimbrone and the beautiful vistas. Do not take a taxi - they charge ridiculous prices. The bus is only like 15 minutes.

Opinion from my Neapolitan friends (liberally translated): - If 'cost' is not an issue for you, POSITANO is the best according to the locals. - AMALFI is also good, but just as expensive. - RAVELLO is nice and pretty, but it's up the hill (not on the water). Closer to Amalfi - If you want to save, go for ATRANI, walking distance to Amalfi.
- Another spot, not excessively touristy, is FURORE Parking is expensive and rare so not having a car is not a bad choice. Buses go up and down the coast. Mid-October may still be good for some beach time, so these are the 100 best beaches in the area: http://www.spiaggecostieraamalfitana.it/spiaggetratto3.html

I agree, Positano is the best base for visiting the Amalfi Coast. Buses are plentiful. There are also the ferries - however, I don't know how often ferries run in mid-October.

Thanks so much for your posts. Sounds like Ravello is a nice choice and I will look into Positano accommodations.
