Grand Hotel Ambasciatori in Sorrento. Our room (with a balcony) had a view of Capri on the left, Mt. Vesuvius on the right, and the sea (complete with harbor) was right in front of us. The trip was 3 years ago and I think of that view often.

EDIT: I'm having troubles accessing the hotel's website, not sure if it's my wireless connection at the moment. Apologies if the link doesn't work.

Randy - Just returned from Sorrento and stayed for the third time at -

The other suggestion you received is also a good one - stayed there a few years ago. Great views, near the oldtown section and easy to catcha hydrofoil to Capri or other areas!
If you have the time you might want to check out Villa Massa - The largest producer of Limoncello in the world with over 16,000 lemon trees. A fun couple of hours.

Ciao, Greg

The Punta Regina is a fantastic hotel in Positano. The rooms have huge terraces looking out to the sea. You have breakfast in an open air restaurant on the roof. It's beautiful, terrific. You won't find better views.

Their website might give you an idea:

The Maniello Hotel Group own 4 hotels in Sorrento including the Ambasciatori. They vary in price with the Royal being the top rated. The Royal is a bit nearer than the Ambasciatori to the town centre but both are no real distance from the railway station. Have a look at Google maps to check out the various locations.

You might want to look at this brand new hotel La Favorita, just behind the Tramontano. It is getting very good reviews and depending on when you are going may be able to get a deal as it is its first season.

Have stayed several times at the Tramontano and it is one of our favourites for staff etc. However, unless you pay for the better rooms, even the seaview rooms can be a bit hit and miss regarding size.

Be aware that Positano is VERY steep w/o roads. Cars are not allowed so there is lots of hill walking and stairs. Hotels have little golf-type carts for luggage.
